I'll definitely look for "Auto und Sport". I'll be in Stuttgart for my annual trade show there. To make a long story short, the airport, hotel, and convention center are all less than a five minute walk from each other, and the airport has a huge newsstand and gift shop. Perhaps the best newsstand/bookstore I've ever seen in an airport....and I'm a guy who travels a lot! Assuming I find a copy, I'll pm you for your address and mail to you. I'm leaving November 5. Weekend with daughter in London, then in Stuttgart November 8-11. I'll let you know how I come out.

I'll be in my usual London location. Marriott Grosvenor Square, which relatively speaking, isn't a bad DX spot. Usually my daughter and her boyfriend keep me pretty busy, but I'll see what I can do. When I get to Germany, my days are pretty long, and the hotel (Movenpick airport) blocks just about everything except for locals 567 and U.S. armed forces on 1143. But since I'm bringing the "heavy artillary", I'll do whatever I can to make time for DX, and step outside at some point (in each place) to see what I can find. I'm going back....at least to London...in February for some time off with Mrs. Cyberdad, and should have more time then.

I don't know if it means anything, but when I'm in the UK, neither 531 or 891 from Algeria has a particularly impressive signal. I'm going over there in two weeks (UK and Germany). I'll be pretty busy working, but time permitting, I'll check these out....

I'd have to dig through my old 1991 copy of WRTH and see if I checked these guys off, while living in The Netherlands. I do recall pulling in a number of the Arabic stations in, during those long, damp Northern European winter evenings.

Radioman, no unfortunately not. Actually, while there, my radio (my current DX-440) gave me a lot of grief, with the front end frying out. I even sent it back to Canada, at considerable cost in money and time, to have it repaired, but stuck to a cheap, locally purchased radio after that. Having said that, I was able to DX much of Europe and parts of the Middle East, but not the North Americans.

Excellent! If their latest Auto Katalog (2011) is still on the stands, that would a bonus! I do collect car magazines from around the world and yes, I do scour the newsstands at international airports, even if I have to run from plane to plane!

Certain international car magazines are available in Canada, the British publications being most popular. I did have a pretty reliable source for German car mags, in Halifax, while Ottawa is my source for magazines from France and...China.

I'll look for Auto Katalog as well. Fortunately in addition to having a very large newsstand, the Stuttgart airport is very well-designed and compact. Also, it's literally across the street from my hotel. I can get from my room to where the newsstand is in about five minutes. I generally get over there at least once a day.

Also Tincap, if you have a connection in Minneapolis, there's a newsstand there....Shindlers....that has periodicals from all over the world. Its a local legend. I used to get up there all the time....now it's once a year at best. As for the newsstand at the Stuttgart airport, as big as it is....it's almost all German stuff.

I'll certainly make time to give it a shot when I'm over there. But have you ever tried the DX Tuners site? Assuming it's still going. I was using it about four years ago, and IIRC, I had about a half-dozen or so from North America using a receiver located in southwest England....WCBS, WTIC, and WWKB come to mind as being in the group. Perhaps one or two of the other New Yorkers and something from Boston (but not WBZ).

I've read that DXing expeditions go up to the Scandinavian countries, layout a bunch of Beverages (and perhaps consume other types of beverages... ) and haul in a lot of stuff. The UK also appears to be a good perch (including FM DX catches from the States). But generally, with North American transmitters being restricted to 50 kW, I think we get the better end of the stick for TA DX chances.

And Cyber, Auto Katalog 2011, would be a special annual issue of Auto Motor und Sport. If still on the newsstand, please purchase that one. If not available, the regular monthly issue would do just fine. 8)

When I'm in Minneapolis, I'll put Shindlers on my list.;D Actually, Minneapolians are fortunate, Shindlers sounds like a great mag shop. And they have a great classical music station out there, Classical MPR, which provides a lot of great programming through out the US.

Getting back OT, things are very quiet at the moment...too quiet. Even 1215 is het-less... .

Along with Absolute Radio on 1215, BBC WS on 648, etc. Once evening falls, Radio Farda on 1575 should be a good bet, as that frequency is not too crowded. Saudi on 1512 and Iran on 1521 should also find their way onto your log sheet...plus so much more. I'm jealous, guys! I'd never be able to do that (anymore) on a trip to Europe, with my wifey!

Updating from previous....

I'm writing from my usual hotel in central London. Unfortunately, I'm in a room on a lower floor with lots of noise, which makes DX pretty much impossible in the room. Daytime, even some of the locals are rather weak, except for 567 (Spectrum Radio), 720 (the 1kw BBC 4 local transmitter. Meanwhile, the BBC blowtorches on 648 and 693 with sticks about 30-40 miles away are able to smash through the noise, but are weaker here), and finally Sportstalk on 1089 is also good. As for 747 from Holland, it's audible in the room....but just barely.

At night there was just too much noise for any serious DXing. A couple of skywave signals, with the strongest being hip hop music on 1422 and pop music on 1440 (R. Luxembourg?)

This morning I had a few minutes, so I took the DX 375 across the street to Grosvenor Square (a park), and did a quick scan. Conditions were sunny and cool. 747 had a respectable signal, but with some sort of whining noise. Otherwise, things on the band were pretty much noise free. Several other signals from the continent were present, strongest being France on 621 and the Netherlands on 675. This used to be classic rocker "The Arrow", but what I've been hearing is religious programming (in Dutch). The most intriguing catch to me was what sounded like German on 549...underneath the strong local on 558. Any ideas what this might be?

I'm switching hotels this afternoon (I have a free Holiday Inn night that would otherwise expire). I'll be about 3 miles from where I am now, but the hotel is a concrete slab high rise, so I'm not expecting much. Then I'm off to Germany for my conference Monday. I'll report anything significant.
