Thanks for the list, little by little

What time in the morning do I need to be up??

Definitely before sunrise, but depending on the time of year you might be able to hear them a few hours before sunrise.

LOL! With my one finger typing skills, you are most welcome!

And yes, you'd want to be up well before sunrise...keeping in mind that what ever you are listening for, must also be in the dark.

For example: Sydney Australia ~ local sunrise 5:38 am, local sunset 5:55pm EST (BTW, their DST begins Oct. 2nd, moving their clocks 1 hour ahead). They are 10 hours ahead of UTC, you are 7 hours behind UTC...a 17 hour time difference (until Oct. 2nd and then...changes yet again when we change our clocks 1 hour back in Nov). Currently as I type, it's 8:10 am (Wednesday) in Sydney, while you are sitting at 3:10 pm Tuesday afternoon. So, when the sun sets in Sydney at 5:55 pm EST local time tonight, it'll be 12:55 am PDT tomorrow morning for you, meaning that between 1 am and your local sun rise, you may...with great conditions, good equipment and a certain amount of luck, bag a station from Sydney.

We here in the east, trying to bag trans-Atlantic DX, have it a little easier, in both terms of time and distance (we're closer to Europe/Africa, than you, to Asia). Still, the challenges are there, but east or west, the excitement of catching DX, from another part of the world, is worth it.

Happy hunting!

I did get Absolute earlier this evening, but like you I've had a pretty long day.

"Short 'n sweet". I went back to 1215 a few times after my post Monday night in Ottawa. Whatever I had heard earlier on 1215 wasn't there any of the times that I checked. Or if it was, the splatter from CFGO was just enough to cover it.

The best I could do was was hets on 927 and 1116. I'm a assuming 927 was probably Belgium. Not sure off the top of my head 1116 might have been. 747 was blank, as was 1134. The only other notable development was when I hit the reset button by accident...531 in this case...and there was Cuba (but only for about fifteen minutes). No trace of CIAO.

Oh yeah....the other positive development was getting my Harvey's fix at lunch! ;D

I was getting some het on 1116 as well, but there's not much on the other side of the Atlantic, which would trigger that and most Asians would already be in daylight, anytime after 6pm EDT. 747 would be blank, as Radio 5 now cuts from 400kW to 60kW between 0000 -0500UTC. As for the big Croatian on 1134, I have it listed as winding up daily broadcasts at 2345UTC, so that would be a pretty empty frequency, anytime after 8pm EDT. The het on 927 could be Belgium, but only 1am EDT, if you got it before that time, it could've been -a real long shot- the 100kW Kenyan on Africa's east coast. And ya, kinda weird that the usual "local" trouble makers, like CIAO, were not out and about.

Glad you've had your Harvey's fix! We're not big fast food aficionados, but we've taken a bit of a hankering to A&W, which has been making a big come back.

Isn't Boston your next stop? Who knows what you can pick up, being much closer to the coast!

Cheers!

Well, we now have a mystery on our hands with those hets....especially 927. This was just before 11pm eastern, so Belgium should have been off. Or maybe they were just signing on.

As for my week...yup, I'm in Boston tonight and tomorrow. I'll post if anything "interesting" turns up. I'm back in Canada Thursday night. Breakfast meeting in Waterloo on my way home Friday. I stay at the Fairfield Inn in Guelph....right down the street from the CJOY stick(s). No pun intended, but truly a very formidible pest! (The shortcut for Boston-Chicago is through Hamilton-KW-and London)

And finally, I'm not a fast food guy, either, but I like Harvey's....and In and Out in California. Which is sort of similar.

Update from previous regarding my road trip this week.

Too noisy in Boston for any serious DX.  Same goes for my location last night west of Toronto.
I'm in Canton, Ohio for the next three nights. I'll report anything I come across that might be of interest.

Sidebar for Radioman....

I didn't exit Canada today via Detroit-Windsor.  Instead, I used the Bluewater bridge (Port Huron-Sarnia) about 55 miles Northeast of Motown.  On the Canada side, WSCR was clearly audible on the GM car radio from about 40 miles away from the border.  WGN and WBBM also present in Canada, although somewhat weaker.  No WLS (or WMVP).

I had plenty of time to check it out....hour-long delay at customs (for no apparent reason).  ???

Thanks for the report Cyberdad--I appreciate you taking the time to satisfy the curiosity of a fellow DXer. Sorry about your traffic mess.

Unfortunately, my efforts at barefoot TA DXing will have to end without any success (unless we count the hets I heard Monday night). I'm reluctant to do that, since I'm not certain what those were. My subsequent hotel nights were in places that had just enough noise to rule out any serious DX.

I'm currently in Canton, OH for the weekend. Nice enough hotel, nice enough room, but right by electrical equipment room for the indoor pool/fitness center. Also on the ground floor and a couple of doors down from the elevator. Once again, the noise isn't all that extreme....just enough to screw things up.

I have 3-4 more trips between now and the end of the year. North, South, and West...but no East. I'll have to put my TA ambitions on hold for a while.

Hmmm...since I can't seem to remember this season's semi-official thread, I'll continue with this one. :D

Radio Farda is up tonight, on 1575 kHz, for those wanting to catch it. I've bagged it a number of times in the past, but this is the first time I'm picking it up on the Sangean PR-D5. 8)

You can check it against the on-line stream here ~> http://www.radiofarda.com/audio/broadcastprogram/live.html

Happy hunting!

RE 1575 Radio Farda, do you also pick up the jamming?

It is a noisy frequency, but if they're using the same type of tone, as have been used on the SW frequencies, then I have to say no, I have not heard the jamming.

Interesting. Understand it being a noisy frequency, with multiple high power users. 1575 Radio Farda tends to be jammed during the evening hours, with semi-random audio noise. I don't think I've ever heard the jamming during the day hours, but I will admit I am a casual listener to 1575, only when I am in a vehicle.
