75th Anniversary of the Transistor

I was contacted by the IEEE Solid-State Circuits Society in regards to some publications I have digitized which they wish to use for their celebration of the 75th anniversary of the transistor... and in the process I realized that the transistor is nearly as old as I am! The rebirth or "second generation" of radio was a product of the portable "pocket radio" and it was a new generation of Baby Boomers who adopted the technology and made Top 40 radio the dominant element of the industry by the time the later 50's rolled around.

Nice! I didn't realize the 75th anniversary was coming up, but it turns out the invention of the now obsolete plate contact transistor was in fact 75 years ago this year. The Bipolar transistor, which was commercialized and still in widespread use, was invented in 1948.

Transistors didn't become commercially viable for 5-6 years after that.

Here's another anniversary: It's the 15th anniversary of the iPhone.

After years of rumors and speculation, it was officially announced on January 9, 2007, and was released in the United States on June 29, 2007.

Of course the release of the iPhone is what made the transistor radio obsolete.

It was around that time that Microsoft came out with its Zune digital music player. One of the features was it has an FM radio built in. The device was a flop and off the market in a couple years.
