774 Akita, Japan heard in Hawaii

Congrats, gar.

After all those years living with Cuban dominance of the Florida airwaves, must be pretty exciting for you.

Keep the reports coming!

What time was it, When you picked it up

Great Catch Gar

Today's "great catch" will eventually become a pest when he wants to get real DX like ABC Melbourne.

A directional receiving antenna will help. Something like a large loop.

Please keep us up-to-date on your DXing activity!

Great catch Gar. I knew you'd hear it sooner rather than later.
When you try for Australia, don't go to bed until just before Hawaii sunrise. That's when you'll have the best shot at it.

Thanks!

When I first heard something in 774, I Googled to see the call letters and the results showed some station from the Philippines DWWW but that's a music station, only 25 kw, and a lot more distant.

I found a YouTube video of someone's catch of the station in Japan and it sounded like the same man talking, so I knew what I was hearing.

And I also learned that many in the western US have heard it too and even stronger. Probably with better equipment.

1116 from Australia is going to be a problem because there's nasty interference on that frequency from the usual indoor background stuff.

Hope that goes away because that 1116 in Brisbane was fairly easy for me to hear on Oahu.

Congrats. JOUB is common here during the mornings - I heard them last night around 1:30AM PT. In Hawaii, you should be able to get a lot more trans-Pacific stations than you would on the West Coast.
Use 594, 693, 747, 828 to knock off the rest of the big Japanese/NHK stations. Use 972 and 1566 for the big blasters from Korea. 612, 702, 1116 Australia. Marshall Islands 1098, Tahiti 738, Tonga 1017, maybe 2AP Samoa 540 also possible there.

That's a good list. An additional suggestion is the CNR1 station on 1593, which I heard in Kona last Christmas, just before HI sunrise. I'd also add ABC Local Radio 774 in Melbourne mentioned previously, and ABC Local Radio in Emerald on 1548. Some DX'ers on the US west coast have heard both Aussies and NZ on 531. If you can get past the splatter of the Hawaiian on 1570, the Thailand VOA station on 1575 might be doable as well. For DXing Asia, I remember thinking when I was in Hawaii that early morning (5-6am) in Hawaii would be a good time since it's dark to the west of you and long past sunrise in North America.

Thanks.

You saved me a lot of time searching to see what stations are from where.

And it's good to see there are other choices from Australia besides 1116.
