The old Cole cross-cross directories have solved the mystery, for what it's worth. The first 787- numbers went to KFJZ-AM and FM in 1977, 787-1000 for FM and 787-1270 for AM (as in 1270 kc). Another source said KVIL had one in 1978, but I can't find proof of it anywhere in print.

haven't thought about those criss cross directories in years.....

They were the ideal way to chase actualities from eye witnesses until a reporter got to the scene.
