79-Q/93-Q

I'm interested in airchecks of KKBQ-AM and/or FM during their CHR heyday from the mid 80's to early 90's. I live in the Tampa Bay and would be glad to trade anything past or present.

Try here.....

there is an airchecks section where you can find some things.

I think I recorded some of 93Q when Motley Crue was supposed to be up there...probably in 1985 when they filmed the "Home Sweet Home" video at The Summit. I know it might not be what you're looking for, but if I still have it, I'll make an MP3 of it.

I have more than a dozen ranging from KULF 790's flip to "79Q," the debut of 92.9 (flip from KYND to a simulcast with 790), and the sign-off in 1991. And, of course, stuff in-between...

How come airchecks are mostly a trade-issue? Is it not legal to have them posted on a website somewhere? just curious..

.....I too remember the morning that 790 KULF changed to KKBQ "79Q", sometime around June 1982.....then later in early '83 92.9 came on with the handle "93FM" probably until sometime in '85 when that handle was changed to "93Q", to match the change of AM sister to "Hot 79Q" when they had the 'hot' format for a short time with Barry Kaye, etc., etc......can still remember hearing the "93FM" and "Hot 79Q" handles being aired between songs to this day......also that 790 was airing with the "AM stereo" pilot at that time......forgot which AM stereo they were using (Motorola or Kahn)......

Jarod,

I'd love to hear this. Can you post it here?

I recall they were using the "93FM" imaging when the Senior Road tower went on the air in the fall of 1983.

They were using the 93Q handle in early 1985, so I think the change happened the previous year.

I don't recall the "Hot" part of the 79Q imaging, although it may have been brief. "79Q" was what I remember hearing. The AM simulcast the Q Morning Zoo with the FM, then both went their separate ways the rest of the day. I recall that 79Q was somewhat more dance/R&B oriented, while the FM leaned a little more Rock. Not a huge difference, but noticeable if you sampled both for a while. 79Q was axed in favor of the FM simulcast in 1987, IIRC...probably as much a result of the great Oil Bust as much as changing listening habits.

They were using Motorola, as I recall from listening on my Sony SRF-A1.

.....I believe your account is more accurate than of what I remember.....it still strikes me funny that during that era (1982-1985) I still recall of tv ad spots for "93FM", "93Q", "79Q", and "Hot 79Q" imagings, also on concert ticket sales posters, and on billboards esepcially along loop 610 at the time.....trying to rely on a rusty memory and then to try to place them on a defined time frame can be a challenge......another post reminiscent of the "good ol'days"!..........

?? In the beginning, it was full time simulcast.....then later they split with no simulcast of the morning show IIRC (which was stupid in my book)...I always thought they should have positioned everything around the Q....93Q79 on the bumper stickers would have looked cool! I barely recall a HOT slogan but it didnt last (wasnt that after the John Landers left for New York?)

I recall that

The original 79Q was Top40/CHR like the FM was......(FM of course was after 79Q had zoomed to #1 in the books!)....

Originally KAHN...MAY have swapped to Motorola in the final year but I dont think so...the AM exciter is still in the rack...but never used now...I had a Sony XRA33 which decoded it also....(but the CE at the time was not happy with it as the sideband response was NOT the best on 790 for KAHN...but gawd it sounded great with the Sony in Wideband mode and AM Stereo!...better than the FM in my opinion)

Got enough? You might try Archer here:

http://www.archer2000.net/archervalerie/

Archer was the original producer of the Q Morning Zoo with John Lander and wrote and produced all the bits. He was around for several years but I don't know if he's saved any airchecks.
