790 & 550 wasted frequencies

There must be something better they can do with 790. I had honestly forgotten the station was even there until I remebered listening to the World Series on The Score some years ago.

Both 790 and 550 are decent frequencies. I can't believe they can't be more than "throw away" stations.

790 was good in my opinion when they ran The True Oldies Channel, but Citadel pulled the plug on that along with 1450 AM in Springfield Mass, and 105.9 FM in DC.

550 is dark until Disney finds a buyer. Blount is looking at 550's sister station in Hartford, CT. Not sure if they'd want 550 too.

Let's hope not lest Providence's radio market becomes like Jacksonville's (in the order of 20 religious stations). I still stand by oldies being the best option on 550 & not the canned satellite stuff either (T.O.C.).

I live in Florida, but we were driving thru RI on Oct 8, after Disney shut off....but wasn't 550 running something then? Slightly outside of Prov, I thought I heard "WDDZ" mentioned on the car radio on 550---almost like an amateur operation. (Unfortunately, I did not listen while driving through Prov.) When did it go dark, exactly?

I tuned in 550 this morning and all I heard was WGR Buffalo. So 550 in providence is definitely gone for now. I'm surprised to learn that WGR is only 5,000 watts. It sounded just like a 50,000 watt station this morning.

Wow... I knew that a low dial number made a difference, but I wasn't aware that the difference was so drastic. Wow! Thanks for that link and graph.

Just west of Providence, I have been hearing 540 WLIE from Islip, NY on Long Island with a fair signal during the day, and 560 WHYN in Springfield, MA with a decent signal also during the day. Amazing range of these low frequency stations. I remember driving up the Mass Pike and the New York Thruway toward Albany, and 630 WPRO just made it over the New York border before completely fading out. Also during the day 630 WPRO can be heard with a decent signal in coastal Maine south of Portland. It especially helps when your car radio is not getting any static from the engine while driving.

Yeah I've picked up WPRO from Rye New York (20 miles North of Manhattan) all the way up to York, Maine. That's a span of 300 miles. WPRO has great potential with that signal.

It wasn't strong by any means, but I did hear WPRO in the daytime in Bermuda in 2005. It was the only 630 I heard in the day.

Wow. That's Wild. WPRO would be a real Powerhouse at 50,000 Watts. Anybody know where the next closest 630 is at?

To Bermuda?? I'd say either DC, Savannah (same latitude almost), Wilmington NC (1000 w) or even San Juan! I got 580 & 810 San Juan in the day there, but not 630.
