790 needs to dump Chuck

Who the hell at 790 decided to dump Chuck Oliver for Chuck Smith? He is the worst personality on Atlanta radio today. Whats worse is Matt and him have zero chemistry in their ramblings and often act like they are going seperate directions at warp speed. Matt and Oliver may not have been the best but they were entertaining with a lot of potential.

790 has shot themselves in the foot with their moves lately.
______________
I feel sorry for people who don't drink. When they wake up in the morning, that's as good as they're going to feel all day

I think they wanted to capitalize on the urban audience that the "Stews" brought in. Don't be surprised if they dump Matt and hire another African American host.

Its not what color someone is that they bring in, its whether or not they are entertaining and Chuck Smith could put insomniacs to sleep with his horrible commentary.
______________

I agree. I really enjoyed Matt and Oliver, but Smith just doesn't fit. Like you said, when they're rambling, they're going in opposite directions. They have no chemistry together. Smith was a very solid DE in his playing days, but he's a below average radio personality. Chernoff does his best to try to make it work, but it doesn't most of the time. I've tried my best to be patient and give Smith a chance, but I'm really growing tired of him. Hopefully they'll switch Chucks again and get it right.

I'm glad to know it's not just me. I've written Matt Edgar several times since "Big Chuck" started. Smith is just terrible. In the past, Chernoff would lead and Oliver would follow. Now Chernoff tries to establish a flow and Chuck just flies all over the place, ignoring whatever Matt says. Chuck likes to settle every argument with "I played in the league, you didn't, nuff said".

Smith is unlistenable.

P.S.- Two things Chuck Smith does do well is name drop and say "that's old school".

I thought it was just me. I've listened to 790 since the beginning and Chuck Oliver became my favorite host on that station. I thought it might just be me who didn't appreciate the switch. I don't care for Chernoff as much as some might, but I think he and the Kang had really good chemistry together like you said. One problem is that Chuck Smith sounds like Stews Lite. I'm not trying to start another Stews praise/bash thread at all btw. It's just that his style kind of reminds me of their show only I enjoy it when they are doing it. Me and a friend were talking about 790 the other day and he felt the same way. I think bringing in Chuck Smith is going to turn out to be a mistake unless that show really starts to gel soon. I mean no disrespect to #90 either as a hometown Falcons fan. I enjoyed his play on the field, but that show is nowhere near as strong as Southern Comfort imho.

Is Oliver out the door?

I don't listen to sports radio much except during football season. Is Chuck Oliver no longer at the station? I like him as much as any host in the city.

Oliver is still at the station. He's sort of a roving football reporter/fill in guy now.
Edited by MikeinKennesaw on 08/11/05 01:05 PM.

Which he says he enjoys according to the website, but I think they are underutilizing him in that role.

I thought you think Toucher is the worst personality on Atlanta radio today. Please clarify your worst personality position.

I'll play contrarian. I think he has actually improved alot since they first teamed up. He went from being the sports guy in the morning to having to carry half a talk show for three hours. Give him a little transition. If he is not contributing once Falcons Fever sweeps into Atlanta blast him then and get ready for the Chernoff and the Mitch show. Isn't the program director job to refine the host's skills?

790 is trying to capturing the black audience that was loyal in this timeframe when the stews were there. For two hours a day they are the only local sports talk show so they are trying to broaden the base that much more.

Oliver boorish act does get stale after awhile and Chernoff can be smug so maybe that rubs other people the wrong way. Plus the bopper's opinion on the stews is well known so I wouldn't expect him to like Chuck Smith either.

Actually, if you want to put insomniacs to sleep, you turn the dial to 680 and listen to Perry Laurentino.

I'm with most of you guys. 790 is my main radio station in town (and has been since '99); i've stuck with the station despite some questionable moves but this is quite honestly the first 790 show that I have heard that borders on UNLISTENABLE.

Listen, Chernoff is a real talent (especially for a 28 or so year old guy); he carried his own show during the original Big Show debacle, but he needs to pull weight on this with the brass not unlike Dimino (im assuming) did when he and C.O. couldnt coexist on the air together.

Kaing can be grating but he is good with Chernoff. Does his recent reassignment have anything to do with his personal problems (divorce)???

[fantasy]Or bring back The Bottom Line from 10a-3p b/c Chris and Nick are still the two best radio personalities in this town.[/fantasy]

I'm glad somebody started this thread b/c ive been thinking it for awhile now...

680 and 790 are now in a dead heat...

...for the worst midday shows on Atlanta sports radio. "Monsters of the Midday"? Absolutely horrible.

I tried to give it a chance, but I can barely listen to fifteen minutes of this show. I'm not a huge fan of Matt Chernoff, but even I feel sorry for him. Chuck Smith is unlistenable. He's a know-it-all, constantly drops names, always talks over Matt, and like you said, they have zero chemistry. As a member of the demographic they are supposedly trying to go after with this show, it's not workin' for me. For what it's worth, many of my friends who, like me, are big Stews listeners aren't too thrilled with Chuck Smith either. Send him back to Frank & Wanda's boring morning show, and bring back Chuck Oliver. I miss Southern Comfort, which I thought was a fun and informative show.

Chuck said on the Zone this afternoon that he will no longer be broadcasting Falcons games on the radio. He said because he is too busy with more TV work. Is it that or does Infinity have say in the announcers and they are not happy since he left Infinity station V-103.

He also threw in he will be doing more TV work on WSB.

Stews were on after Matt and Chuck Oliver so that is not a valid argument, they were on opposite O'reilly and its not hard to beat him since his show sucks. The only time its decent is when the judge guy fills in for him.
______________
