790 Shaking Up the Lineup

Fact of the day: Dimino is what the Rain Man would sound like if he were on a sports radio show. Also, discussing what happened on a PLAYING field as if you were recounting the Normandy invasion gets old really fast. Buy a sense of humor somewhere! I also wonder if he ever listens to air checks of himself, because nothing has changed in his delivery since he's been here. No economy of words whatsoever.

Speaking of Cowherd: has there ever been a dumber guy behind a mic who is convinced he's smart? Worst. Analogies. Ever.

I think the real problem is that over the years they have let their own masterful self promotion convince themselves that they are as great as they have always claimed to be. It always used to crack me up to hear Dimino and Cellino whine on Bottom Line that they should be nationally syndicated. Based on what, their stellar Atlanta audience performance?

The Zone has always told everyone how great their programming is, but they only have ad dollars to base that on and not audience numbers. Those dollars tell you they know how to push product, but does it tell you that this is true audience compelling programming? They look at the ratings books each month and blame it on Arbitron, blame it on the signal, blame it on the lame Atlanta sports market etc. What they never blame it on is themselves.

Hey Boys, maybe the fault lies not within our stars, but in oursevles. Perhaps Atlanta is saying, we have given you a shot, it's just that there are other things we'd rather listen to.

Couldn't agree more. You know it's gotta be killing them over there that they are being beaten by 680, especially that they think they are the greatest, and say so at every oppurtunity. My question is how does a station bill so much when they consistently get beat by their competition? How does a station who consistently gets beat by their competition open up their own sports bar? How does a station who consistently gets beat by their competition stay on the air?

My guess: they are great salesmen who are very well bankrolled. When a personality as bad as Brisket can send them in there to say: "Yeah, our listeners LOVE STEAK! We'll give this spot the old: "HEY, IT'S STEAKY!!..." and you'll triple your sales!

On-air buffoonery aside, you gotta hand it to them for their sales prowess.

I've got no beef with Brandon or Jeff, and I hope they knock it out of the park. But, I was told Brandon is a schoolteacher. How's that going to work?

"I was told Brandon is a schoolteacher. How's that going to work?"

Hopefully he teaches English and he'll hang out with the Stews and tutor them during breaks after his show is over.

He is giving up teaching for broadcasting. I like him. I would much rather hear him teamed up with Chuck and Mike Bell. That would be fun and compelling radio.

I remember that a few years back Steak Shapiro won an AIR award as best Atlanta on-air personaility, beating out Clark Howard.

I soon discovered how that worked. They based it on the percentage of your listeners who voted for you.

So Clark received 156,000 votes, which represented 16% of his audience.
Steak received 47 votes, which represented 77% of his audience, and walked away with the award.

The AIR Awards are complete nonsense.

One of my stops when I was a P.D. was Philadelphia. A jock on my staff told me (and I verified) that a station promotion assistant was on the Philly March of Dimes "Air Awards committee"; she was busy rounding up her pals at other stations to assist in listening to/judging the airchecks submitted for the awards. So, in this case, the work of professional air talent in Chicago ultimately ended up being evaluated by 21 year old part-time banner hangers.

That blew whatever shred of credibility the AIR Awards may have had out of the water for me.

Based on the revolving door nature of that slot on the Zone, he would be wise not to give up the day job.

If he learns to take a breath once in a while and to not spill out everything that he wants to say about a topic in the first two minutes he may have a chance to evolve into something. Woolverton is just painful. His voice cracks and dives off at the end of every statement. 790 must be running a jobs program because there is far better talent working in smaller SE markets that could fill that spot professionally.
My guess is that it is all about trimming the fat and saving some cash. The ratings are down and the cash cow of the station is now going to be doing 1-4pm.
This is a disasterous turn for 790.

The thing about 790 is they have a very insular culture when it comes to their on air people. Many of them are co-workers AND best friends and I don't think they're as interested in having the best talent on the air as they are having their buddies working with them, ratings be damned. I find it interesting that they Chernoff might as well be dead to them now---at least I never heard them mention anything about where he moved or any of the circumstances of his exit. And this for a guy who was apparently very tight with a lot of the people there.

I came close to getting in there at one point but I chose to masquerade as James Taylor one day and ran Chernoff and Mitch Evans for an "interview" that lasted at least one full segment, and possible more than that, I don't recall. Turns out they couldn't take the joke and abruptly canceled a stand-up/impression set we were talking about me doing at one of their big parties as result. Never mind that I displayed significant talent and several of them really liked me; a couple of the Mama's boys over there couldn't laugh at themselves so this apparently made me dead to all of them. The fact that I subsequently hit their message board with both barrels about it obviously didn't help my standing there after that either, but you'll have that. I'll always remember fondly how Brisket came on bragging about the James Taylor "score" the next segment. Good times!

How I would love to compete against them someday...

They did talk about it on friday morning. especially Nick who started with I know I might get in trouble for this then when on about missing Matt. Steak and him both said while these jobs were the zeniths of their careers in the long-term this will be some low-rent radio job Matt once had. He will have a big future on TV.

That's good to hear. So where did Chernoff go?

He does that Sports Nite show on CSS TV every night, does something on the NFL Network with Jamie Dukes and does Falcons pre and postgame on Dave. Dude isn't struggling for jobs.

Also, Chuck eulogized Matt a bit at the beginning of Monsters on Friday talking about what a pleasure it had been working with him for all these years etc.

I remember this. It was their "what listener can get the biggest celebrity to call in" contest. I got the San Diego Chicken to call in for me and Dimino gave him a hard time. I got mad because they treated a "fake" James Taylor better than they treated the "real" San Diego Chicken.

I listened to Woolverton as much as I could take last week. No gravitas. He sounds like a high school kid with a podcast, and that will never change. Whoever programmed this disaster might want to look past one of his buddies and go find a real talent from outside your little click next time. This isn't Tulsa for godssake.

Woolverton would never work in a major market unless he was in with someone. This is ridiculous. he mumbles through sponsors, has a very unsettling giggle and trails off every sentence. I heard Adams yesterday and it was as if he was the big bad wolf trying to get all his thoughts out and never breathe.
I am floored that 790 would think that this has any chance to compete with Cowherd.

They should hire Bob Neal. He is great when he fills in for the Stews. I think that would draw some 680 listeners over. the guy has a great voice and can tell great stories. He has been there done that. Woolverton especially with Chuck Oliver is annoying. He thinks he can be funny and get in on the action of poking fun at the Kang. Nice try buddy but it doesn't work. Brandon Adams sounds like he is eating a hoagie while terying to get out his point in one big breath.

Bob Neal is the real deal. More talent than anyone on that station.
