790 the Zone is Done

I was listening this morning during the dreaded Steve Gleason bit. The minute Steak said Steve Gleason was on the line I cringed. When it was over I thought this isn't going to be good. So now Mayhem is fired and this is probably the last nail in the coffin for the Zone.

It's not just that Mayhem has been fired it is about what has been happening the last several months that has bothered me. Thy picked up syndicated fare when their two competitors are now local curing the day. It used to be they were they station who was local all day. Then Cowherd added his third hour and they created about the stupidest local show format ever. They took the four hour Archer & Bell added Jon Michaels and made it 6 hours with Archer& Bell together for only 2 of the 6 hours.

Mike & Mike, Colin, and 6 hours of Archer & Bell. Cue Dandy Don, the party is over.

I think 790 would be wise to revive Quixie in Dixie... if they're clever they could round up old clips of Bob Todd, Pat Hughes, Tony Taylor, McKee & Willis, etc to sprinkle in among the oldies. There are still quite a few QXI alum in the area who could provide the material. A clever and industrious production guy could build a real blockbuster.

As much as I would love 790 go back ti Quixie, There is too much money in $ports radio. Unfortunately even if they went total ESPN and became the #3 sports station in this market, 790 will bill more as a sports station than # 1 oldies in this youth crazed market. It really sucks being no an age demo that nobody wants. I know I am in it.

... while at the same time, all sports radio is in a demo that I don't want. Can't imagine why anyone would waste their time listening to one microsecond of that garbage, but I'm sure that's just the ravages of old age talking... although I seem to recall feeling pretty much the same way when I was 22.

Interesting mention regarding age and sports radio.

My dad listened to the White Sox on WGN when we lived in Wisconsin..so it makes sense that older generations would be used to, and capable of, listening to sports whereas I would imagine younger gens would prefer watching it on TV or via a computer. I have a hard time picturing success in 24hrs of sports talk....game coverage mixed in there, sure...but not all sports talk...

Then again, I don't listen to it so..yet again, I can't fathom tolerating that.
