790 The Zone Now on Star 94 HD3

While tuning around today I noticed that 790 AM the Zone is now being broadcast on WSTR-FM 94.1 HD3.

If you're expecting better sound quality and stereo forget it! Mono audio and doesn't sound any better than if you listen to them on AM 790 (unless of course you're trying to listen during a thunderstorm).

If they can get the HD3 channel to sound as good as AM, then that's doing pretty well. If they made the HD3 sound great, it would steal quality from the other two....

So HD3 quality isn't supposed to be as good as HD2? Maybe I was expecting too much after listening to the WSB-AM stream in stereo on 97.1 HD2.

It's so nice to have the oldies and Friday Night 80's back!

No...HD3 has just the leftover bandwidth...
sounds better than dial-up streaming...but barely

Wow, I'm impressed someone found it. It's on as an experiment. It's only a 16kbps stream. It is mono on purpose because it is the AM air signal feeding the HD3. There isn’t really enough bandwidth to do 3 good sounding HD stations. 48k is about as low as you can go before you really hear the artifacts. WSRV is running 2 48K streams I believe. The Zone runs their board and does all their production in mono anyway. Even if we fed it a nice stereo feed for the 45 sec of music at a time would it really be worth it?

P.S. Don't get too used to it. Now that it's become public knowledge, we’ll probably be forced to turn it off.

"...forced to turn it off?" Because 790 would object to being heard outside the perimeter at night or something?

Seriously, it would be nice to hear Tech football night games.

My guess would be The Zone doen't know they are on Star's HD3 and/or they are not paying to be.
