790 The Zone: "We had a great run..."

Any predictions as to when these words will finally be spoken? It's obvious the programming side really couldn't be worse. Every show sounds like amateur hour. Grand Buffoon Shapiro is still convinced he's the personality that makes the morning show and the whole operation tick, Brandon and Woolvy sound like every show is their first, The Stews are simply an embarrassment to broadcasters everywhere, and Pollack comes across like a sheltered high school kid who can speak authoritatively on exactly one subject, and even then it's clumsy. I shudder to think how bad that show will be when football season ends.

And again, will someone please save Cellini?

I'm told BLB is filing for BK in St. Louis, if it hasn't already happened.

Tell you another thing: there is only one group of people that hopes 790 signs off: The 680 sales staff. And maybe not even most of them.

Having two sports stations - whether you like them or not - has been a great thing for people working in the industry, for advertisers trying to reach men and for Atlanta sports in general.

If you think the promotions people or board ops at 680 are hoping that 790 dies, I'd completely disagree. There needs to continue to be jobs and work in Atlanta radio.

Do you think David Dickey is going to be more or less aggressive/ innovative if his station is the only one left?

The Dickey's will wait until Steak and company are bankrupt, then buy what’s left from the carcass for pennies on the dollar. 680 the Fan keeps Dimino and uses his baseball wisdom and banter for morning drive.

Everyone else gets canned and the Stews will still be syndicated but not be heard in Atlanta eventually.

I wish you would take your "I hate Steak Shapiro" agenda somewhere else. What good does it do to wish for WQXI's demise? It benefits no one, and it certainly doesn't make you sound very intelligent. If you don't like The Zone, don't listen. And if you've got a personal matter with Shapiro, go take it up with him face to face instead of whiny posts here.

WQXI is owned by Lincoln Financial and LMA'ed to Big League.

With Lincoln looking to sell soon...and Big League having financial issues of their own...what is the possibility of LF taking over the operations of the Zone and cancelling the LMA (LF did this with another company in Miami just recently that leased their signal...also sports talk...also on 790 AM). The Zone under LF operations and sharing a GM with Star 94?

Would Dickey be willing to purchase both the LMA from Big League and the station's license from LF?

Also...680 sister WALR-AM 1340 just flipped to "The Fan 2", taking Fox Sports away from the Zone. Of course...the signal of 1340 is unrecieveable outside of the perimiter.

I don't think Big League's contract allows Lincoln Financial to take over 790. And as long as Big League is able to pay Lincoln Financial, I don't know what the motivation for LF to take over 790 would be.

In Miami, they cancelled the LMA because Primetime Media stopped paying it. Unless BLB stops paying no reason to think LF would or could boot them off the signal.

I wonder how much the billing at The Zone has gone down........
$13M for a one share station was always incredible - I wonder if they are down more than the rest in ATL.

Exactly what I was thinking. LF has enough problems on the FM side to have to concern themselves with WQXI too.

As for Printetime Media in Miami, money was not the only reason the LMA was sacked.

I forget the details, but the chief of Primetime has some very public and serious legal issues going concurrently.

It is also interesting to note they took the format and people as is and did not do a wholesale housecleaning.

Unless hell freezes over or the Zone sales staff cannot make it happen, they are here to stay, just as it should be.

Why all the anger directed at them? I think they are one of the better class acts going in theis market and they actually deliver some big value to their advertisers.

He's a troll who takes his own failures out on 790, nothing new to see here.

Is 790 still on the air? You're kidding, right?

Why would anyone want to listen to a group of self-important blowhards who think they're doing the audience a favor by broadcasting? They're reminiscent of General Motors, which explains why both are in trouble.

For decades the mindset at GM was "We'll tell you what to buy and you'll buy it." Not anymore. The Zone seems to feel the same way. They think we'll listen because they think they're important.

"I wish you would take your "I hate Steak Shapiro" agenda somewhere else."

I don't hate Steak Shapiro, I just think he's a bad broadcaster and an oblivious egomaniac on the air. I'm sorry, is this not a forum to air opinions on broadcasting?

"What good does it do to wish for WQXI's demise? It benefits no one,"

Actually WQXI will live on regardless of The Zone's fate. And I dare say having a listenable operation on that frequency instead of the current ca-ca would benefit plenty of people.

To answer your original question, they will pack it up and say we had a great run when it is no longer profitable to run the station. They do not have a lot of cushion and with their lease payments to Lincoln there is a large nut to cover every month.

So, if they end up in the red, they won't be sticking around long. But, they continue to find ways to make money. And as long as they do, you can bet Steak and his crew will be on the air.

I know I speak for many people when I say it's actually spelled "ka-ka".

Now to get back to the trivial things in life..... :D
