790 The Zone

Matt Chernoff is playing up the fact that a major programming announcement is supposed to be announced at 8:25 tomorrow morning. I wish Steak would announce he's taking himself off the air, but I doubt that will happen. Any thoughts on what the announcement might be?

Don't know what will be happening, but I hope somehow Beau Bock is returning and Chuck Oliver gets a better time slot.

I bet it is probably something lame like John Smoltz is joining them every Thursday at 8:30 for the John Smoltz Report.

Maybe they're announcing that they're actually going to put on a product people want to listen to.

790 is the lamest major market sports station in the country. It sounds, more often than not, like a bunch of college kids playing talk radio in their basement.

Whatever the "big" announcement is, unless it's a total overhaul of the "talent" on the station, it won't matter to me. I'd rather listen to ESPN talk about sports on a national level than the 790 clowns talk about local teams. Dan Patrick and Colin Cowherd are just much more entertaining.

Maybe they finally made the decision to part ways with Chuck Smith. He has to be the most disappointing former athlete ever to do sports talk radio. The guy tried to steal the Stews act and used all the street verbage he could squeeze in to start, now he has tried to be more main stream. He is awful to listen to. Chernoff needs to get back with Oliver. Chuck does not sound major market.
Maybe the Dimino show needs to be fazed out locally too. Chris is always talking about that St. Louis show that he does. Let him devote more time to that and make him the 790 baseball guy.
From my friends at Radio One, I know the Stews won't be going anywhere until their deal ends in late '08.

I have to agree. Chuck Smith is not very good. Chernoff + Oliver had more presence.

Chuck Oliver is the most talented sports guy at that station (Bell is a different kind of talent). The fact that they still haven't figured out what to do with him shows why the station has never made it past fringe audience numbers.

No kidding, the guy knows his stuff.

The changes have been announced and I like them for the most part. Mayhem gets extended to 11:00 a.m. with Dimino now part of the show. Good decision. He always sounds best with them and for some of us Dimino and Cellini working together regularly is great. Mayhem is always the best when Dimino is on.

Monsters now starts an hour earlier at 11:00 and Chuck Oliver is now added to the show. Outside of firing Chuck Smith a lot of people should be happy. MAybe Steak will reduce his hours.

I never understand why they broke up the Chernoff/Oliver team to begin with. That was 790's best show.

What did they really change other than adding that big tub of goo Chuck Oliver to the already bad midday show? I am really looking forward to hearing Oliver discuss the Auburn offensive line in early February. When anyone says Atlanta can never be a big league town I point to Chuck Oliver and say, "case dismissed."

Dimino and Cellini should resurrect (on Good Friday, no pun intended.) their great afternoon show of four years ago on the mornings.

Dimino had a better show with Cellini and better ratings when partnered with Oliver... Don't discount the sports audience for dull college football talk in the ATL. Also, a little home cooking with Oliver's drawl instead of two guys who both sound like they were part of a Sopranos casting call. The show just didn't work for large chunks of the Atlanta sports audience who viewed both as "Yankees" and outsiders.

Learned poster;

I was not aware that the ratings were better with Oliver than with Cellini. If that is the case, why was Oliver relegated to nights when The Zone can't be heard outside of the studio due to the daytime signal?

We could get into a discussion on whether there are more Northerners than Southerners in the ATL. My own observations, very unscientific, show that at least 60% of the people who live in the metro are from somewhere and 50% of those are Northerners.

While the numbers were better with Oliver they weren't huge. The Stews were burning up the station at the time in mid day and the honchos decided that Urban was the way to the illusive big numbers. So the Stews were moved to the afternoon and Chuck Smith was paired with Chernoff to add another "urban" voice. Dimino was sitting on a huge contract and hated working with Oliver (he couldn't stand being next to someone smarter than he is), so he was given his own platform. Oliver suddenly became an extra appendage.

Of course, they now know that the Stews huge numbers in mid day will not be repeated in afternoon drive. Buck and John is the number one show in the market, proving that the success of urban in mid day was based more on being up against O'Reilly (non sports on 680) and just music on the urban stations. The combination of a white guy sports show on 680 and Ryan Cameron on urban has deflated the urban myth for 790. So now, the King comes back to mid day.

I always liked Southern Comfort with Chernoff and Oliver, I don't know how it will work with Chuck Smith in the mix.

Oliver on during the day is good. I don't know if I like dissolving Dimino's show though. We'll see.

Even though Chernoff was born and raised here (I believe that to be true from his Atlanta allegiances), Matt and Oliver is the best pairing to fit the local demographic. I remember when 680 came on the air back in around 2000. Once they beat down Mayhem and they moved to mornings, the 790 sales rep came to me and told me how The Bottom Line was good enough to be a national show and how Dimino and Chellini were going to dominate in drive time. I kept asking the 790 rep, who since has moved on, how that domination was going every time Buck and Kincade won the ratings with men 25-54. After a few years 790 admitted the mistake and the Oliver Big Show came on. The ratings were better with Chuck on against Buck and John. I think that Oliver and Chernoff is the closest formula that 790 has to B&K. Having Chuck Smith in on the mix is just going to drag the conversations to a halt. Yes Chuck, we know you played for the Falcons and Tennessee. We also know that you are ill prepared and not articulate or interesting enough to radio in a major market.
I applaud the moves of 790, who as a whole I prefer over 680. (I don't like the morning show at all and can't tolerate Patrick)
Dimino by himself was a bore fest. It was like he was the all knowing sports god preaching to the masses. He will be much better with others able to point out his pomposity and to make him more human.
In my opinion, if 680 ever lost B&K they would be playing Mexican music in a few months.

Let's face it. Mexican Music is probably on the way anyway. It does not matter how good this station is or not, The AM dial has been on its way out for years. It's us, those die hards that are not letting it die in Atlanta. I like this station a great deal,
I think that all day parts are ok, with the exception of Midday's. I am praying that this historic set of Calls WQXI are not sent to the trash , with some sort of Mexican
gibberish noise. Please God, dont let the noise that plays on the other frequency's take this one.
