790 the Zone

Will 790 the Zone station owners ever buy an FM station that has enough power to be heard outside of 285 at night or during the day on something other than your car. Much better product tan 680. The only thing 680 has going for it is Matt and Chuck. Buck and John lost their their touch a long time ago. Buck is such a homer that he is afraid to say anything negative about any local team. Mayhem in the AM is byfar the best show in Atlanta since Boortz retired. Matt and Chuck are second.

I doubt it. The ownership (Lincoln) of 790 and 94.1 have "unofficially" been trying to sell out of radio. Atlanta got short changed on the FM allocation (based on 1960's population). There are not that many FM market covering signals in Atlanta:

and acquiring one will be very expensive, compared to other cities like Phoenix

Lincoln Financial recently purchased an FM in West Palm Beach, which they are moving to Miami to pair with their AM sports station, WAXY. The question in Atlanta, however, is whether an FM is available to buy. Radio One supposedly wanted to sell 97.5 when the 107.5 power increase took effect, but I've heard nothing since then. That's not the best signal for a match with 790, but at least it's an FM that covers most of the market. But is it for sale?

Phoenix (Market #14)? Try Albuquerque (Market #68), where the FM dial is really jammed. (Nature plays a wonderful role in making most Albuquerque stations over 4000 ft. HAAT. ;D)

(I wonder what is the smallest market with the largest amount of FM stations. Also, is Atlanta the largest market with the smallest number of FM stations?)

That would be hard to qualify. The Northeast Baltimore, Philly, Washington DC, etc. are jammed so close that some suburbs can pick up another market's signal.

If you mean ratio of radio stations to persons, I'd think that Anchorage AK would certainly qualify! When I was stationed there in the late 70s, I think it only had 6 FM's (at that time, stations were only allowed between 100 & 106 MHz)! Now, it's as if the sky's the limit. But, if the advertising pie can be sliced, who am I to complain?

Probably because you're in zone I/class B country, where the stations are smaller (weaker, max power 50k) and jammed closer together.

A class B FM 492 feet (50 KW max) is really similar to 100.5's Class C2. IMHO believe if Chattanooga, Charlotte, Macon, Birmingham and Atlanta were rezoned Class B all three cites would have a better listener choices.

That's true. It's the reason I'm not doing my own qualifying - just taking the information from the same source and counting the FM stations. For instance, according to radio-locator with a default of "Include Distant Stations", New York has 65 full power FM stations. Philly has 46. Baltimore has 46. Washington has 44. There is plenty of overlap, to be sure, but at least it can be used for comparative purposes.

(BTW, NY has so many full power FM stations that only ONE translator is listed. )

Mayhem in the AM? Chuck and Upchuck? You have low standards but I agree with you about...well nothing. Bell and Archer are probably the best Atlanta has to offer.
