Maybe because the Bay Area sits on the same "ring of fire" (although the particular area in Chile is the one that produced the greatest quake ever measured 50 years ago and is likely atypical) and is perhaps a case study in what a big quake in a developed nation can do.

Thanks David! If a quake this large hit the bay area we'd all be toast! And there would be not many stations left on the air to be talking about it!
