8 proposed minority channels good for Sirius/XM merger

i think that this is a wonderful idea to expose us to shows that both services don't have right now! for instance, bloomberg and cnbc are being carried on sirius - but dave ramsey isn't anywhere on their service. a dave ramsey type of show might be on one of these minority channels. what's so wrong about that? i like it.

what's wrong with it is that concessions are being proposed in the first place. there doesn't need to be any concessions made in this deal. these are people who are voluntarily opting in to pay for equipment and a subscription. these people know what they are getting into. forcing them to pay for channels that are forcibly being turned over to a consortium that does not represent nor have an interest in satellite radio is right up there close to extortion in my book.

you know how reverse racists like al sharpton and jesse jackson will go around protesting big corporations who would give them money or something in kind just to get them to go away? that's how i see this. one of the groups against them has involvement with jackson and sharpton.

to update this news however, one of the co-signers of the letter wants his name removed because he feels like 8 channels out of 300 (or 2.6%) is not a fair representation of radio content for black people that make up the population (or 35%). this is STUPID. as i said earlier, these are people who are voluntarily opting in and paying for content so not everyone is going to get these signals. and xm even has a dedicated african american channel and if you want to stretch it some, so does sirius in the foxxhole. a better count would be the percentage of TOTAL satellite radio subscribers who are black, and it may turn out that 2.6% may be right on target. hell, some black people may not even listen to those channels. speaking for myself, i am and i don't/wouldn't.

i know there is not a market demand for minority channels in satellite radio. if there were, there would be multiple channels for them already. but if it will make merger get here faster, then whatever. just get it done already.

Competition...

If there were competition, a proper mix of content would evolve due to financial forces. 35% of a market is a force that would demand attention. Maybe someone is just recognizing what will happen when there is a lack of competition. ???

i agree. but you see, there is a big ol' non sequitur in that logic. it assumes that the 35% of the population market has access to satellite radio. it doesn't. black people have more access to common terrestrial radio than satellite, and even then its ratio of content that would appeal to that market is based solely on the percentage of black people in that market. so why should, in order to provide an accurate ratio 105 of the 300 channels be dedicated to minorities? to make another arguement, you would argue that there need to be hd sidechannels devoted to minorities even though hd radios don't have enough market penetration and there aren't enough hd stations broadcasting for it to be profitable or logical.

8 stations is way too many because there is already one on each service. but if stations need to be sacraficed, it should be two instead of the 8. max.

(before anyone says anything, i refuse to use p.c. terms, or recognize the race of people despite being classified by others as being "black". i'm not. i'm an american.)
