what's wrong with it is that concessions are being proposed in the first place. there doesn't need to be any concessions made in this deal. these are people who are voluntarily opting in to pay for equipment and a subscription. these people know what they are getting into. forcing them to pay for channels that are forcibly being turned over to a consortium that does not represent nor have an interest in satellite radio is right up there close to extortion in my book.
you know how reverse racists like al sharpton and jesse jackson will go around protesting big corporations who would give them money or something in kind just to get them to go away? that's how i see this. one of the groups against them has involvement with jackson and sharpton.
to update this news however, one of the co-signers of the letter wants his name removed because he feels like 8 channels out of 300 (or 2.6%) is not a fair representation of radio content for black people that make up the population (or 35%). this is STUPID. as i said earlier, these are people who are voluntarily opting in and paying for content so not everyone is going to get these signals. and xm even has a dedicated african american channel and if you want to stretch it some, so does sirius in the foxxhole. a better count would be the percentage of TOTAL satellite radio subscribers who are black, and it may turn out that 2.6% may be right on target. hell, some black people may not even listen to those channels. speaking for myself, i am and i don't/wouldn't.
i know there is not a market demand for minority channels in satellite radio. if there were, there would be multiple channels for them already. but if it will make merger get here faster, then whatever. just get it done already.
