830 might be WCCO. ???
850 is not KLA. It's KOA from Denver, CO
890 might be WLS Chicago.

870 sometimes a station from southern Utah don't know the call letters

Actually, scoobyfan1, it's KFLD Pasco. Your station from Southern Utah is probably KDXU on 890 AM, not 870 AM.

There seems to be a particular fascination on this board for KOA, which prompted me to turn on the radio this evening while doing some work on the computer, to see what actually is heard here in Poughkeepsie, NY these days after sunset on 850.

Around 6pm there was a religious station, sounded like "WHAC", must have been WXJC in Alabama with religious programming. It sounded like they were leading up to a full ID at 6:03, when they disappeared abruptly with a power cut.

I heard an ESPN station a bit later, including a promo for the morning show, not sure which station. Around 6:20, I heard another religious station with the Lutheran Hour, likely KFUO St Louis area, a frequent sunset visitor back in the day, as I recall.

Then starting around 6:30, there was KOA with talk, basically dominating the frequency. At times, there'd be a station with religious choral music overtaking KOA. Not sure who that was.

Here in Poughkeepsie, everybody on 850 pretty much nulls me, so there is no dominant regular station at night. I know WEEI makes it in often.

Most of my DXing these days in limited to FM, mostly due to lots of electrical noise on AM and lack of a functioning communications receiver. However, a few weeks ago we had a power outage due to an ice storm, and I immediately noticed the total lack of electrical noise, and so many signals were clearly heard. One frequency that kind of surprised me was 830... WCRN from Worcester, MA was clearly dominating, instead of WCCO. I would have throught that WCRN would have offered more protecton to WCCO, as WEEI does to KOA.

All stations mentioned were heard on a Radio Shack "TRF" (tuned RF) portable, the best AM DXing portable I've ever had. Radio Shack stopped making them years ago!! Audio is not great... no bass, and lack of highs due to narrow bandwidth, but it pulls in the DX quite nicely.

That ESPN station is WKNR Cleveland, OH. 50,000 watts daytime, 4,700 watts nighttime.
