80's music heavily added to 3WS

3WS is heavily adding 80's music to their playlist.
Some of the 80's songs I heard on 3WS yesterday were
1.Madonna-Into The Groove
2.Fine Young Cannibals-She Drives me crazy
3.B 52's-Love Shack.
4.Michael Jackson-The Way You Make Me Feel.

What's next Bon Jovi and Poison?

They're imaging themselves as the "Best music from the 60s, 70s, and 80s". Heard RD Summers use the slogan last weekend during the Diner and nearly ran off of 79.

I wouldn't be surprised if 3WS drops the 60's pretty soon.

Hmm....I dont listen to 3WS but did they ever play 50s stuff?

did they ever play 50s stuff?

They sure did! They play music that's between approximately 20 and 40 years old. As the years pass by, that range moves along with it. It's no big deal at all. What's amazing is that people are so surprised by it.

Oh, another one. Tempted by Squeeze.

Maybe they're doing a "60s, 70s and 80s songs that got turned into commercials thereby ticking everyone off" theme.

Long live WJPA, WLSW & WJAS!

"Tempted" went into heavy rotation fairly soon after they started pounding the '80s. I assume it tested well from the use in the commercials.

I bailed out on 3WS a while back, but the ratings trends indicate they're still doing fine.

The station sounds to "dark and spooky" for me. The imaging liners (is that Dave Mason) the processing and yep some of the music doesn't fit.(at least for my tastes) I've noticed many of the segues from music to music seam sloppy! However overnights and Saturdays 7-Mid are just fine, TK does the job. But again my tastes lean towards high energy fun programing.Long live WJPA(and as far as 1320 is concerned, why not a re-incarnation of 13Q as a real oldies station with say Captain Clark at the helm!)

Because the people who want to listen to Top 40 from the late 50's to early 70's because it's "the music of their youth" are getting too old for advertisers to care about.

Why not a re-incaration of the Make-Believe Ballroom with nothing but old 78's of the Dorsey Brothers, Glenn Miller, and the rest of the Big Band crowd?

Better yet, why not bring back the real oldies, and play nothing but Paul Whiteman, Rudy Vallee, and the rest of the jazz greats from the Roaring 20's?

A close friend of mine collects old wax cylinder recordings. He even has a few of Enrico Caruso himself. If you want real oldies, why not ask some station to play more of those recordings?

No, they never played any real quantity of 50's music. Remember, 3WS was an A/C when it came on the air (they played currents). I'm sure someone can tell us when exactly they became all oldies, but I want to say late 90's and by then they were certainly all 60's with a few 70's thrown in.

Not that I took careful notes at the time, but I seem to recall hearing artists like Buddy Holly, Jerry Lee Lewis, and Little Richard on 3WS when they first went oldies, shortly before I re-set my car's 3WS button to a different station.

This is just my admittedly biased opinion, but, as long as Sheri Van Dyke is the music director, 3WS will keep on stinking. They should get rid of her.

They went oldies in 1988.

I remember listening to 3WS in the late 70s - early 80s, and they had that "soundtrack of the 60s" show on. I also seem to recall most of the music they played was of a similar vintage. However, I may be remembering my youth differently than it actually was (much like remembering that Fruit Stripe gum tasted good).

The problem is, 3WS has such a reputation as the "oldies" station that when people in their 30s or 40s hear music from their adolescence on it, it doesn't please them - it makes them feel old. They've simply been 3WS for too long for that "oldies station" perception to change - if they want to change their music to the degree they have been, they need to either get new call letters or do a MUCH better job of reimaging than they have up till now.

Maybe they should call it classic hits 94.5.

The website has it too.

For those who haven't seen it, allow me to describe it: an off-kilter blue oval, outlined in black. "94.5" in plain yellow Ariel typeface (about 20 pt font), and a white "3WS" in similar unassuming, about 16 pt. font.

See for yourself (careful, it loads slowly):

I won't swear to this 100%, but I believe Van Dyke was relieved of her MD duties awhile back. Corporate is in charge of that end now.
