KSTJ PD Don Hallett has added KKLZ programming duties and the tweaking has already begun. KKLZ now plays an 80s song each hour. Examples include:
Rod Stewart-Forever Young
Journey-Open Arms
Journey-Don't Stop Believing
also 80s and even 90s remakes such as:
Phil Collins-You Can't Hurry Love
Huey Lewis-It's Alright
I can understand what they are thinking, these 80s songs make the station sound more like classic hits instead of "oldies". Plus they might help lower the demos.
On the flip side, KKLZ loses some of it's unique identity and starts blending in with everyone else when they play these songs. How many stations play Journey in this town? Plus the 80s songs have constantly been played since they were currents and have been oversaturated.
An 80s song that sounded really good on KKLZ was "That's What I Like About You" by the Romantics. It has an oldies feel to it. Interestingly that song wasn't a big mainstream hit when it was a current in 1980/81. It was more of a new wave song with a big cult following. It seemed to me at the time to be a reaction against "corporate rock" power ballads by bands like Journey. I think it's ironic that all these years latter the Romantics song which was edgy for it's time sounds great on oldies/classic hits yet the huge hit Journey songs ruin (IMO) the flow and feel of the station.
