80s on KKLZ

KSTJ PD Don Hallett has added KKLZ programming duties and the tweaking has already begun. KKLZ now plays an 80s song each hour. Examples include:

Rod Stewart-Forever Young
Journey-Open Arms
Journey-Don't Stop Believing

also 80s and even 90s remakes such as:

Phil Collins-You Can't Hurry Love
Huey Lewis-It's Alright

I can understand what they are thinking, these 80s songs make the station sound more like classic hits instead of "oldies". Plus they might help lower the demos.

On the flip side, KKLZ loses some of it's unique identity and starts blending in with everyone else when they play these songs. How many stations play Journey in this town? Plus the 80s songs have constantly been played since they were currents and have been oversaturated.

An 80s song that sounded really good on KKLZ was "That's What I Like About You" by the Romantics. It has an oldies feel to it. Interestingly that song wasn't a big mainstream hit when it was a current in 1980/81. It was more of a new wave song with a big cult following. It seemed to me at the time to be a reaction against "corporate rock" power ballads by bands like Journey. I think it's ironic that all these years latter the Romantics song which was edgy for it's time sounds great on oldies/classic hits yet the huge hit Journey songs ruin (IMO) the flow and feel of the station.

Hallett does not have one original thought coming from his head. Sometimes budget considerations appeal more than programming savvy and KKLZ is certainly suffering on the budget side, ask anyone in Sales. The Morning Show is unbelievably bad...I give it six months tops. Star 90 days. You have to love Las Vegas...more losers than winners on any given day. Off topic...Tom Chase is a programming savant, damn he's good.

No, I think it'll go about a year. Mike O'Brian will talk his way into staying right where he's at. Every time he's in danger of losing his job, he's able to smooth talk his way into keeping it. He's done it at KLUC(until they finally got tired of it and dropkicked him), he did it at KXPT until he went to Beasley. Allegedly, he did it at Star until he convinced management that he should be on KKLZ. From there, he allegedly again convinced management that he should be a permanent fixture on the morning show instead of being a "special guest star". Now he's gotten what he's wanted, and he'll tell whatever tall tale he has to in order to stay. Should he be given the boot, I don't think any station in town would even think of hiring him. His reputation proceeds him.
