80's

Why are so many stations playing 80's music? I used to love KJR-FM for the 60's/70's. Now they play primarily 80's with some 90's. JACK is primarily 80's, KPLZ plays a lot of 80's, KQMV has lots of 80's and now KBSG is playing 80's. Are John Mellancamp, Prince, Madonna and Bryan Adams that cool? As I scan the dial with my wife we count at least 10 stations in Seattle playing 80's music: KBSG, KJR-FM, JACK, KRWM, KPLZ, KZOK, KISW, KNDD, KQMV and even KUBE during the Old School Hours.

Correct me if I am wrong, but didn't the all-80's station fail due to lack of ratings and billing? Is there a lesson missed? Where is a station targeted to 90's fans of Nirvana, Pearl Jam and others? Where is a Classic Rock that really rocks that can be heard in other markets playing Soundgarden, Alice in Chains along with Metallica and others. Seattle was once a rock town, what happened? Just the observation of a 30 something sales geek.

Just give it time Dan. People got sick of it once and then the Point was history. The same will happen and then you'll have a handful of stations fighting over that small share of the audience. At that point, one of those stations will flip and given the recent pattern we have seen in radio, that new station will either run jockless or they will hire stand up comedians from Atlanta or jocks from Milwaukee for about 30 grand a year to fill their drivetime dayparts.

DJ Dan, I couldn't agree with you more. You are right on.

Bottom line, it's all a demographics game. Who are 80's fans today? Uhh, I believe 25-54. You know, the demo that advertisers covet more than any other. This is why former oldies stations now are playing Huey Lewis and Madonna. It ain't rocket science. (Although, as a music AND radio fan I would love to hear some more of the obscure non-top10 hits every now and then!)
