Hey, Chief:

The last time I had a drink with Mr. Davidson, he was, in fact, as old as you and is just as white. His bankroll, on the other hand, is extensive and quite green.

Finally came the switch to spanish, and I guess it has been that ever since. Max Turner was the contract engineer when I got there, and with Max being there that also included the services of Jeff Goode and all of the Susquehanna engineers. Mike Rabey also helped us out from time to time.

All very good engineers. Not sure what Max is up to these days. I met him when I was working at WTUX and a crew was there to paint the WFMS/WTLC tower on Hawthorne Lane. He was concerned that some of the guys were drinking and he didn't want them up on the tower for obvious reasons, but I would drink (heavily) too, if I had to climb those things every day! I think 107.1 must hold the record in this area for the most format changes since it first went on the air back in '75.
I think Max retired when Susquehanna sold out to Cumulus. He was an excellent engineer. I admired his attention to detail and quality. Not only did 107.1 flip formats like hens lay eggs, they went thru GMs the same way. I think one of the longest lasting GMs was Dwight Barnett..I know there was quite a pile of them. The real problem for 107.1 is that when you come down to it, it should have found a way to really be a "Hendricks County" station. The tower is way up outside of Danville, and even with modifications and the Harris Platinum Z transmitter, it really couldn't be an Indy station. There just wasn't enough power & reach. I think if they had tried a little harder to be a community station, they could have done better "plowing their own ground". I think in the long run it could have been a stronger, more profitable operation. But..hey, my opinion's just as good as the next guy. Another question for long debate is why in the world did they ever buy 810AM, which is licensed to Indy, and had nothing really to offer.
