website is still under construction apparently.

3 sports stations in Orlando is too much - what will give?

I guess they're banking on when they move the facilities to a new "sports" themed bar/restaurant on I-Drive. Kinda seems counter-intuitive to have a local station operating like that in the tourist area, but hey....

Miami-Ft. Lauderdale has 4....

Miami-Ft. Lauderdale also has 4 professional sports teams. We have one, and they won't be very good for awhile..... ;D

Two sports stations in Orlando could barely draw a 1 share combined, and one is a 50K blowtorch with a solid night signal. So yes, three is too many and something is going to have to give at some point.

The sports radio in a restaurant concept came from Bruce Cox, who from my understanding was involved in this venture at the start but isn't any longer. It may work in the largest markets, and I agree that Orlando is a strange place to start due to its checkered history as a sports town. If it will work in Orlando, it will work in a lot of places.

Well if you put it that way, we only have 1 "legitimate" pro team, the Heat. :)

As to ORL, I'd say it makes it easier to cover play-by-play of other teams, especially the Tampa ones*, if a station wants to go that route. And, lots of NCAA teams to cover in FL as well. Gators & Seminoles are not talked about much here....even the Hurricanes seem to be on back burner here.

[*Is there a Jaguars station in ORL?]

Orlando is a little different than most large cities due to its large transient population. Many of the residents came from somewhere else, and brought allegiances to other teams with them when they came. They could care less about the Magic - unless they are playing their favorite team. All of the Florida cities are somewhat affected by this, but Orlando is probably most affected.

I actually think that should be a part of 810's strategy for play-by-play, although I have a feeling they are going to take a "play-by-play free" approach, since the station seems to be going for a guy talk type image. The smart move here would be to get the Dolphins and the Yankees and then try to make a move on either the Noles or the Gators when their rights become available.

Also, who launches without a damn website?

Good question on that one.

I know of one AM station that runs 50,000 watts full time, yet has never had a website: WKVM in Puerto Rico, and, oddly enough, it's on AM 810!!

Is there a connection between the 810 frequency and fear of technology? :D

When WRUF-FM 103.7 Gainesville relaunched as a country station two years ago, it had no website for several months.

Correct Mark, and how's that working out for them? Lots of country up the road and many still miss Rock 104, one of Florida's best Active rockers back in the day.

Too bad we can't pick up WJRR in Alachua..... :(

WRUF-FM is performing in the ratings about the same is it did as Rock 104. Although I don't have the exact figures, my best guess on billing is around $1.2 million annually.

Its sister station, WORO (FM) does not have a website, either.

A likely reason is that the owner realized that running radio stations was expensive, and the meager billing produces losses. Thus, no money for a website.

I gotta ask who's running this station? Their spots and drop levels are all over the map, their board ops apparently don't know what VU meters are for (host voices sound distorted most of the time) and traffic is lousy. Hell, I'd rather listen to Ed Tyll's old show on that station than this stuff -- and that's being kind.
