820/ 1470 - changes coming?

Captains America recently said "big changes" are coming to the station.
Am hoping his show moves back to 820.
The news programming should be placed on 1470.

Ironically, the programming on 1470, many times of the day, particularly late afternoon, is better than the more powerful 820.

In the December ratings 12+, 820 had a .4 share with a cume of 57,400. 1470 had a share of - with a cume of - this is down from November when 1470 had a share of 0.0 with a cume of 16,000.

I'd like to see Captain's America move back to 820 too, I could listen to him again. I cant hear 1470.

820's "news" format shot up to a 1.5 in October, then both share and cume plummeted.

Perhaps because of fewer hours at high power, perhaps because listeners were catching on to the subtle right-wing slant of America's Radio News Network.

Maybe the Captain is going to pay 820 to change back to (brokered) talk?

Maybe there's a translator coming to put 1470 on FM? Otherwise, the most productive course for that station would be bulldozing it and turning in the license. If the news format goes on 1470, it will fail.

Also, keep in mind that 1470's construction permit may still be active, which would move the transmitter location to Egypt Lake, a north Tampa suburb. This move, if it occurs, will give 1470 more nighttime coverage in the Tampa and St. Pete metro areas than the station currently has. There are projected coverage area maps on Radio Locator.com.

Who said anything about Genesis owning an FM station? Smedge mentioned that it may be possible that they will apply for an FM translator at some point... and I guess that is possible despite the fact that the FM band is already pretty packed. I think it's more likely that Genesis will sell off one or more of it's stations in the next year. Salem was very close to acquiring 820 before Maduri snapped it up... I wouldn't be surprised if they're still interested. That's a different story though.

Genesis could still make a "come back" (if you want to call it that), but they need to completely rethink their business model. If small Class C stations like WTAN can turn a profit, then Genesis can do it too, but they need to trim some fat and focus all of their energy on one station. If they scrapped two of the three stations and turned the remaining station into a brokered powerhouse... you know what, forget I said anything...

The Genesis Geniuses really need to wake up.

They need to get their houses in order. There is a presidential election about eleven months away. This is the Super Bowl for the news and talk formats.

Program smartly, and one could siphon a sliver of WFLA's audience. You won't top WFLA, but there will be a demand for information and opinion. There will be an audience overflow.

Genesis should decide what they want to do, and on which stick. And then stick with it. Maybe it means less right wing talk and more news. Maybe it means righter-than-right wing talk and less news. Maybe it means listening to WFLA's program clock to find out when they're in commercials and make sure they themselves in programming at those times.

A news and/or talk station should be feeling blessed to be in Tampa Bay right now. There is a major presidential primary in Florida just a few weeks away and this summer a national political convention is right smack in the middle of town. Forgetting what your own personal politics are, these are events that a news and talk station needs to be all over.

Genesis is being given a full year's worth of opportunity to do some business. Again, they don't have to beat WFLA to actually make money here.

Might this be it?

Now, everybody knows about the story 970WFLA will probably not report regarding the former Tampa Mayor.

I doubt the "news" is about the former mayor's program.
The way Captain's America said it, sounded like something involving his drive-time show, which I consider good.

The "Grok with Greco" show sounds like a stunt that came out of the agency 820 hired to promote it, of course without any advertising budget.

Hint to Schifino Lee: newspaper articles ≠ listeners.

He has a decent show.

There aren't many other local talk radio hosts other than Schnitt and the guy at 570 hosting issue-oriented caller-driven drive-time shows.

Does anybody think that B.M. knows what good radio (or radio in general) is? If he hired the right people and walked away from the station for a year, he would come back to to 1040, 820 and 1470 having some sort of success. Until then he will never succeed.

Shnitt is local, but is syndicated and repeated. He walks a thin line sometimes between the 970 audience and not alienating the potentially larger syndicated audience.
