840-WASTED Air Space!

840 is the frequency of a "station" out on the east coast of Florida which can be received in the Orlando area. Why you would want to spend a second of your time doing this is beyond imagination! Morning drive is programmed with a man and woman who seem to think they are funny. They aren't. Its a disaster. And then later, its crybaby Chuck Harter. If you've listened to this guy years ago, you'd no doubt say he had a good program...spending time with callers, helping to resolve their consumer issues. He DID a really good job! (I stress the word 'DID' as in past tense.) But apparently he's had a series of business reversals and now its "me and you against the big, bad government! He sounds like a spoiled little boy who lost his toy. One of his favorite tricks is to tell you about some person or issue and then say something like: "I have more information about this but I'm not the person to disclose it!" What a bunch of first class BS! Then add to this mix the hum, the noise etc. How much money does it take to fix an audio feed??? What kind of owner or manager would put such a GARBAGE audio on the air and DO NOTHING to fix it???

Like I said, 840 is wasted airspace!!!

It's a daytimer out of Mims... you can actually hear it near Orlando?! The people that run it, the only affiliate I know of for the Talk Star network, are a bit interesting. As is their programming, to say the least.

WPGS can be heard here in Orlando, barely. The ground conductivity in this state is lousy. Long Island is worse. I checked out their website, it's true they are only a daytimer, but they stream 24/7 and they also play music there, but the music is run mostly at night.

I put it on the air in 1986. It was a "Fast Eddie" application that actually became a CP. That is the term given to an engineering firm that was promoting free AM searches, and apps for $900 I believe.

[It was a 250 watt daytimer licensed to Scottsmoor - hows that for a market!]

Ed Shiflett is the 2nd owner since my nonprofit built it and owned it.

Later amended COL to Mims, and when 860 Cocoa went dark, 840 went to 1kw.

Ed and the female co-host are in it for the love of radio.

The economics of running that station keep it in the hobby class, and underfunded. Check the paint on the tower next time you're on 95 between Mims and Scottsmoor.

Out of sympathy, a couple of us beefed up the fence about 7 years ago, at our expense. But we're not going to paint that tower. The steel base is rotted to the point that the legs are going to crash down over the insulator and jerk that tower pretty hard. . .a bad time to be on the tower.

Original tx: Used Gates BC250-GY bought from a 250 watter in Russel, Kansas. It's a Nautel now.

Checking their website...I didn't know Chuck Harder was still around. I may have to listen online some afternoon to see what he's going off on now!

Eewwww ... I did listen to Chuck Harder this week ... and he said some things about President Bush that were sort of "over the top."
I'm not a lawyer or a law-enforcement official, and I really don't know exactly where that "bright white line" between freedom of expression and "yelling 'fire!' in a crowded theater" is, but I do know that Harder is awfully close to it. Indeed, he may have slipped a toe or two across it, but like I said, I'm not exactly sure.
I remember this kind of debate during the mid-1990's, during the "citizen militia" scare and all those late-night shortwave howlers like "Mark from Michigan" and Jack McLamb; I think most of these folks ended up in jail or just disappeared.
No doubt Harder belongs with this rather unsavory group. I hope his network (TalkStarRadio) comes to its senses and allows him to retire.

Don't you have to have more than just a single station to be considered a "network"?

Calling TalkStarRadio a "network" is like calling the New York Knicks a "basketball team."

Oh, wait... ::)

Good point. I don't know of any other AM or FM (or digital/HD) station that Chuck Harder is on. WPGS AM 840 in Titusville (the station we're talking about here) is the only station that is broadcasting his show.
Chuck is on the Internet (www.talkstarradio.com), but that's it.
I noticed with interest the reference to Chuck Harder and his setup as being in "hobby" mode, and that may be one reason (perhaps the major reason) he's still on the air. I wonder if he even has a standard FCC broadcasting license, the kind that Rush Limbaugh or WCBS FM 101.1 (New York City) or WSB AM 750 (Atlanta) has. I wonder if he has a broadcasting license at all (is that possible?).
Contrary to some folks who think that Chuck's show originates from Titusville, he's really in White Springs, near the I-75/I-10 interchange in north Florida, next to the Suwannee River. I think that's about 200 miles northwest of Titusville. He's lived there since 1991, when he relocated from Tampa, where his "For The People" program originated back in 1987.
I really enjoyed the first poster's comments on Chuck Harder. Right on the money! And I'd ask, what in the wide world of sports did the U.S. government do to Chuck Harder, that he would continually slam and slander it day after day, hour after hour?
And don't give me this "Hillary sicced the IRS on Chuck" nonsense. Because that's just what it is ... nonsense. The government was totally benign towards Chuck.
It was the "commentariat" that went after Chuck, mainly because Chuck said some anti-Jewish things over the years [EDIT]
One good thing if Chuck hangs up his mike ... my posts here will likewise cease. :D :D :D :D

[EDIT-offensive content]

Any chance the owners of WFTL-850 would buy this station and take it dark to get rid of that annoying null toward Vero Beach and Fort Pierce? 50 kW daytime from WPB should make it to at least Cape Canaveral...
