850 KOA- Booming into Indianapolis suburbs

Its 7:30 AM, just a few minutes before daylight, and KOA is booming in so loud and clear here in Central indiana it sounds like im only 30-40 miles away from the transmitter. It is very cold here this morning and we have a fresh layer of snow, I wonder if that has anything to do with it. Its not uncommon at all for KOA to be heard here, but it usually isnt really audible for anyone other than a DXER. I have never heard it this clear here before, it doesnt even come in this clear out in Kansas. Its weird because I can actually just barely hear 700 WLW-The Big One, and I am only 100 miles away from the tower, yet KOA is coming in so strong it is bleeding over on 840 WHAS Louisville- also only 100 miles away. Yet KOA is like 1300 miles away. It really isnt a big deal to be able to I.D KOA here, but to hear it with this sort of clarity is just crazy, I cant even hear the Lower Powered Indianapolis AMs with this sort of clairity. Driving right under stoplights and power lines with only a very slight audible Buzz. What doesnt make sense is one time driving on I-70 I could barely hear KOA at the Kansas-Colorado line, only about 150 miles away from their tower in Parker Colorado. I dunno, AM skywave vs groundwave phenomenon still doesnt make much sense to me. Sometimes they come in better when you are farther away. ???

I saw this post about 40 minutes later and tried to tune in on a portable radio that I have closeby. There was a show on what I think was 850-AM where the M.C. was talking to a coach of the Green Bay Packers. I had it faintly for a few minutes then the signal faded and did not return. WHAS at 840-AM was coming in well and this was just past it on the dial. Obviously, it was a little later - and a little lighter - here about 100 miles southeast of your location when I tried. There was light snow falling at the time.

Up in Gary, KOA will be in clear as a whistle on some nights. Even at sunrise when WAIT 850 Crystal Lake Illinois would sign on, KOA still overpowers WAIT. I'm not sure how long after WAIT sunrise that KOA finally fades away. But at local sunset, KOA will overpower WAIT, and will continue to do so until they sign off at KOA sunset. As for WAIT, they barely cover NW Indiana with their puny signal that mainly covers McHenry County Illinois, but also part of the North side of Chicago.

I went back to the car at about 8:45 this morning, and 85O was nothing but static and noise.
