with a strong signal to boot, this was about a weak ago, sorry I wasnt in town to post this sooner, I was getting it like local last night here in Indianapolis. I usually cant get koa that good until winter comes. but I heard it was gonna be 37 degrees in Denver last night,,, could have been how the signal got here.

Does 850 in Cleveland give you trouble in Indy when trying for KOA?

KOA is a good catch to get in Virginia when you consider the other stations on 850 in the east.

The station in Johnstown, Pa was always too strong to allow me to get KOA with an official ID when I lived in New Jersey.

I thought I heard it in the background sometimes and once, it was a Denver Nuggets game.

That was in the 70s. I'd think there'd be more stations to deal with now.

And don't forget the 850s in Norfolk & Raleigh.

Myself besides KOA on 850 i would Get Norfolk or Raliegh before even getting Cleveland 850 and thats sad here in Central Indiana. Usually KOA is Always the dominent when i have on 850 am

WKNR has a very tight nighttime directional pattern. Looks like you might have a better chance of hearing them during critical hours.

KOA's odds are way up due to WHAS 840's IBOC being silenced.

WHAS is almost a local for us in Cincinnati, especially in Northern KY & Western Cincinnati. Still, I can pick up KOA most nights and especially at local sunrise and sunset in the winter.

To me, their signal is actually better these days than the 80's and 60's.

I've picked up KOA Denver on a regular car radio several times in Delaware or Maryland over the past few years, typically around sunrise. For me, probably an easier catch than WCCO in Minneapolis-St. Paul or any of the Texas stations.

It's not unusual to get KOA here in Tampa at night.

I got it just now.

The station ID is about 12 seconds into the video.

I also have one of those same Sangean portable stereo radios! It's pretty good!

I just received the same Sangean PR-D5. An interesting radio, what with two speakers for FM stereo & very good directional properties for MW DXing.

The Sony SRF-m37 is also a great little radio, if you don't live near too many MW transmitters that is.

I've picked up KOA from SE PA once or twice, but that's a rarity there. The normal occupant of that frequency in the Philly area is WKNR Cleveland with the Norfolk signal (WTAR) butting in on certain nights.

However, it's worth noting that the posters listening location in Hillsville, VA is in SW VA - a few hundred miles to the southwest of places like Philly, NY and Baltimore and well outside of the NE corridor's congested AM band. Way too far south and west for the 850 in Johnstown, PA to interfere. WKNR could still, theoretically, be a pest at this location. However, the mountains are between Hillsville and Cleveland - perhaps dampening the signal coming from the SSE lobe of WKNR's pattern. Hillsville is a tad west of that lobe too. WTAR Norfolk's nighttime pattern points east, directly away from Hillsville, and should not be a factor there. It's more than 200 miles away too.

So, combine that with the fact that Hillsville is a little closer to the midwest than the more populated parts of VA, and it's not unreasonable to expect reception of KOA now and then. It's still a great catch - no doubt about that. But it's not the same thing as picking up KOA on the east coast.

It sure is. Someone here made a post about it a while back and I knew I had to get one.

Is that adjacent channel slop from WGUL 860?

Yes and I had the radio in a position where it was nulled out as much as possible.

I'm glad there's no IBOC noise at night.

(Now if only all stations could do away with it in the day too.)

Nice catch.

Thanks.

When I get a chance and the reception is OK, I'll do a video of the Chicago stations or maybe five good Midwest stations that would definitely include WBBM.

That's the only Chicago station anymore that has a constant fairly good to good signal.

I'd be interested in viewing that. Any reception of WLS on occasion?
I don't suppose you can get 670, 720, or 1000 from Chicago.

KOA - not gonna happen here. I've got 850 WGVS in my backyard, the first NPR station to play oldies (recent format change). On the way to work this morning, with some distance from WGVS, I tried for KOA but instead got Ohio's WKNR during local sunrise.
