850 will be unlistenable for the next week

I mean, it's always unlistenable with Munch, Reghi, etc., but with Newsday saying that LeBron is leaving this is going to be brutal with all of the self-loathing that's going to be done by the callers over the next week.

Any of us that want to hear actual in-depth sports talk (and admittedly you get very little of that from Munch, he's so busy schilling Joe Bees and his other sponsors) are going to have to wait until Browns training camp.

Instead of directing callers to focus on how the Cavs will spend two years rebuilding and get back to the playoffs by 2013, 850's goon squad will encourage the callers to be all "woe is us."

I know he's not reading this, but if Reghi did, he should have his very first guest on Friday's show be an NBA draft expert who can discuss which elite NCAA players without huge egos will be available in the 2012 draft for the Cavs to take and rebuild their team around, ala the Orlando Magic and Dwight Howard.

The fans hold some blame for the huge egos. We coddle sports stars, we empower them to be the fair to lousy role models that many become, we help them immeasurably to be selfish by doing things like going to venues to wave signs, cheer and beg them to say, or in the case of a football guy, cheer "pay the man!" Never mind that they are financially secure as it is, while many of the people who enable them are not. If they win the championship, the rewards for the athlete is more then the satisfaction. It is bigger pay-days in the future via contracts, endorsements and merchandise. The reward for the fans is a day or two of jumping up and down, yelling "we won, we won". Then the fans go back to the same job/school/home. Nothing really changes for the better. Then we buy into the endorsements and merchandise, which further enriches the already rich, both players and organization. While acknowledging the need for entertainment and even passionate pursuit of same, this worshipping at the altar of jocks is waaayyy overdone.

My thoughts all through high school. ;)

I agree with everything you said, in my opinion, sports is great for unifying most males across the country in a common conversation topic. When guys have to make small talk, sports is usually the first thing that comes up and it's far less divisive than politics weirdly enough. Football is great for Saturday and Sunday get-togethers, baseball is the perfect soundtrack for summer, but some people let it go way too far and that's how egomaniacs like Lebron happen.

But then 100 years from now, how much of this will matter?

As a Boston Celtic and Pittsburgh Steeler fan, I could not help myself but to turn on WTAM immediately after... "The Decision." It was a great night for me!

Wouldn't it be funny if there was a sports radio station in Cleveland that changed formats late Thursday night after LeBron announced he was leaving? :D

Munch is the voice of the angry fan. Kenny Roda is the most grounded voice on that station IMO.
