850AM Raleigh going TALK!

Bill LuMaye has announced he is moving from afternoons at WPTF to mornings on 850AM - a new talk station. Didn't catch details.

LuMaye now is saying 680WPTF will become all news TOMORROW while 850AM becomes talk. LuMaye will be doing 6-10AM. Says Neal Boortz will also be on 850.

Atticus, I think you are being a little harsh. I worked for Curtis Media for the last four years, and never found Don or Phil to be anything but kind and loyal to the people there. If this format flips to Hispanic, I agree with your criticism, but if it flips to sports talk, that just might be a salable format. In either case, they have gone out of their way to protect people...otherwise, why keep Brad and Britt for a couple of limited AM signals? You cant just keep losing money forever month over month and not do something...although my feeling is that with only one full time WZTK seller in GBO, the problem may have been staffing...after all, WZTK had 200K listeners multimarket cume. Anyhow, I think you being too tough on Don Curtis. And yes, it is Carbone. I am not afraid to give my name on postings.

I don't know how 680/850/600/whatever will ever be able to even remotely compete with the FM talkers unless they get some kind of FM.

I think one of the talkers should go to 101.1. Does Curtis not get that AM is...dying? Nearly dead?

Don Curtis is in his 70s. He got his start buying small AM stations. He owns the stations and he can do what he wants with them. He's earned that right.

WZTK was on FM. It never did well. In most PPM Arbitron markets, Talk (even with Rush) does not do as well as it did with the diary system. Rush had higher shares on 'PTF than it does on WRDU-FM.

IMO Talk and News will not attract many listeners on 600, 680, & 850. But, it's nice people will have jobs.

101.1 needs to be a music format that is not now available. It could do well in G-WS and RDU markets.
Real Oldies, AAA, Rhythmic (Jammin') Oldies, are a few examples.

What format do you think is missing?

Rush, and Talk Radio, has reached Legacy Media status.
Sports Talk still has a toe-hold with those under 29.
the bandwidths/frequencies aren't annuities.
Curtis has at least recognized deficiencies.

Yea, we need another Hispanic station...or better yet, another Urban station...hey, how about..."Hurban"?! :D

Hurban actually does exist

Time to call up Sirius/XM! Or will they still be in business at years' end? ???

850's positioning statement should have been "850 WKIX we play what Don likes"..Personally I loved the music on 850 but it was so obvious there was no attention being paid to it inside Highwoods..They just slapped some music off Don's Ipod and let it run..I listened alot but it was destined to die.I'm going to miss it..

Me too. It was an amazingly broad playlist... maybe too broad. I enjoyed it when I was in the area. 850 does have a good signal.

Interesting to speculate if WKIX could've done a bit better by being somewhat more focused, with even a bare minimum of personality. It did sound like an iPod, with as allenv points out no attention being paid to it.

R.I.P. WKIX

A sports format would be nice on 101.1, but as others have mentioned on related threads, Capitol Broadcasting has the Raleigh sports market cornered with the 99.9/620 duo...
Also, one question I have concerning 680/850: which station will air the NASCAR races, which have been on 680 since the beginning of last season?

I'm just glad I don't live in the Raleigh area. I still have music similar to what WKIX was playing and just got a new classic country station as well, at least during daylight hours.
