87.7 and 87.9 dial positions?

I flew into SF for a few days last week. I had a rented car with which I was not familiar, but when I turned the FM on it went to 87.7 on which I found programming. I assume that this is the audio portion of TV Channel 6 (87.75 MHz). And it sounded pretty much like a regular Christian formatted station.

More interesting was that when I got to Fremont, I started getting a station on 87.9 which got stronger as I went North. At around 10AM when I tuned back to it, I heard a recording of a German "numbers station". Those of you not familiar with these stations, they operate on Shortwave and send out groups of five numbers which contain coded messages for spies. So somebody had a sense of humor in playing about 7 or 8 minutes of this, and then free form music. No ID that I heard. The audio was lousy, so I suspect a pirate.

Can anybody fill me in on what they were?

Thanks
Matt from Long Island

You're right about 87.7. It's the audio of a TV channel 6 programmed to be an FM station. It's frequency #5 for K-Love in the Bay Area.

We actually do have a station licensed to 87.9, it's KSFH at 10 watts, licensed to St. Francis High School in Mountain View, CA. That's probably not what you heard, however, as it should have gotten weaker as you went north. But their audio is pretty low quality, and they were in mono last I checked.
