87.7 Cleveland

Nahhh, I did not catch this station as DX. I just have a question.

If 87.7's are supposed to all be gone by 2015, why did Cleveland decide to start one up now? Are they hoping to get enough traction, so as to possibly move to an existing traditional-FM frequency in 3 years?

Just wonderin'.

87.7 would be gone from the FM airwaves in 2015, but the station itself won't necessarily be gone. 87.7 (technically 87.75mhz) is the audio to channel 6. By 2015, all low power TV stations (regardless of class) must convert to digital by that time, or go off the air. It means that they must be a TV station if they want to stay on the air after 2015. That's because the ATSC standard isn't compatible with analog audio, & going digital won't allow the audio to be heard on the radio. The current HD radios aren't compatible with ATSC either, as they use a different digital standard. WKQX-LP Chicago is in the same boat, & will either have to be an actual TV station, or turn in the license.

But could it be possible that if the owners also own radio stations in the same area that they could establish a format that could move to FM later? In Memphis WPGF-LP is owned by Dr. George Flinn, (A legend in his own mind in Memphis radio ::) ) who also owns several AM and FM stations. Currently they're simulcasting WHBQ Sports 56 in Memphis, which could be to establish a presence on FM, and move to one of his FM stations later. Then the TV station could do something else once it's gone digital.

That is kinda the scenario I had in mind; but with one exception---is there a stipulation that this (um) TV station, or any 87.7's in the US, must still exist beyond 2015?

[Note: Almavision Radio 87.7 in Miami uses DT 54.4 (RF 29) as alternate audio, so I figure they don't need to be on DT 6 in 2015. They also have 3 channels on DT 54/29.]

The fact is 87.7 is the audio for channel 6, & the audio will no longer be available on any analog radio after 2015. Since ATSC uses a different digital standard from HD radio, the audio won't be heard on any HD radio either on the 87.7 frequency. Any TV station that's broadcasting on channel 6 can still be on the air after 2015, but they must broadcast in digital. I have heard of a few channel 6 stations trying to broadcast audio in analog, but the video in digital, but were ordered by the FCC to turn it off when they found out. I know in the case of Venture Technologies, they have no radio stations at this time, & can't move any format to any radio station. IN Chicago, the only other station they own besides WKQX-LP (LMA with Merlin Media) is WCHU-LD, & that operates as a TV station, affiliating with Azteca America.
