87.7 FM or Ch 6 Analog, Brandon?

Hello.

I don't live in the area, but my wife & I were in Clearwater about 6 weeks ago and I heard on 87.7 in my car on a Saturday morning about 10am an infomercial for a Mitsubishi/Hyundai dealer in Brandon.

Does anyone here know what this station is, or is meant to be? I'd think it'd be an LPTV 6, as it would be a good idea to see the cars....

cd

Before TV was in digital that would have been Channel 6, The nearest 6 is in Orlando but that signal in Orlando is vacant.

I hear 87.7 is being used as a Low Power FM station in some locations. It is also possible that the Car Dealer is using that signal much like theme parks use some AM Frequency's for their own use.--Of course this is all speculation on my part,

I'm not hearing anything on 87.7 here in Sa-ra-so-ta!, since it is a quiet frequency, any station broadcasting on it will travel a good distance. It is one of those channels I listen for because it's there. It won't be authorized here because we have Joy!, the station on 88.1. It would be too close for WJIS's comfort.

Jeff in Sa-ra-so-ta!

I wonder whether you could be hearing channel 6 audio leaking from the local cable system. Here at home I have heard audio from BayNews9 on an FM radio, as it is carried in analog form on Ch. 6 in western Pasco County.

Hmmm that's a thought, and I *was* in Clearwater, but would Bay News 9 lease time for infomercials? Also, is the Pasco Bay News 9---on 87.7/ch 6---intentional?

Well, you would be hearing some other channel, as I doubt that BayNews9 is on the same channel in Clearwater as it is in Pasco County.

I think the reason BayNews9 is on Ch. 6 here is that they put WTSP Ch. 10 on cable channel 9 long before there was a BayNews9 and probably didn't want to move it. WTSP was on Channel 9 because it transmits from Holiday (north of Tarpon Springs) and it needed to be on a different channel on the cable system to prevent ghosting which would have been caused by TV's receiving Ch. 10 both via the cable and leaking into the TV from the strong local on-air signal. Of course everything is different now that we have digital TV.

Oh, but this is a great car radio for DXing, the one I heard it on....2010 Kia Soul. If the 9-on-6 in Pasco is intentional, and still uses 6, and Bay News 9 leases time, this would be my answer then.

Mind you, the reception was anything BUT peachy.....but it would make sense. On w9wi's site, I see no authorized LPTV's on analog 6, so I don't think it could be anyone else. Thanks!

Two other possibilities:

If you were on the west side of the Howard Frankland Bridge, or the west side of the Gandy Bridge, I've noticed (on various car radios) cross-mod from 2-3 FMers.

Or, a remote chance it was someone's iPOD plug-in transmitter inside a car, relaying something local radio.

Ages ago there was a LPTV in the Ybor area. It broadcast The Box or somesuch black rap MTV-like feed, maybe Spanish after that (I can't recall). But AFAIK, it's no longer active (and wasn't audible on the Pinellas side anyway).

"BayNews9 (upside down on some cable systems)." ::)

New York, for example, has a Russian CHR on 87.7 FM. For now, anyways...

It was either Channel 6 in Orlando or Channel 6 in Miami.

Not anymore. Channel 6 in Orlando is now broadcasting on 542.31MHz (*way* outside the coverage of an FM radio!) and channel 6 in Miami is on 572.31. Both stations are digital (as are all full-power stations in the U.S.) so you wouldn't be able to hear them on an FM radio even if it *did* tune that high.
