87.7 (Hot 97) signal

I noticed while driving on Route 9 east from Framingham, 87.7 was very weak and did not become stronger until reaching Route 95 (128).  The signal was decent from 128 South down to the 95 South exit, but become clear past the 95 South exit going into 93 (128) to the Route 24 Exit, where I noticed it was strongest.  I got on Route 24 south and was able to keep a strong signal on 87.7 to Brockton, where is started to fade.  Something tells me wherever they are broadcasting from, it must be in the southern part of Boston, because the signal is strongest south of the city.  I expected much greater coverage hearing about others' experiences listening to the station, but as I got onto Route 495 North, it was fair at best, and then onto 95 south toward Rhode Island, the signal was eventually lost before reaching the RI border.  Did they power down the signal or maybe move the tower again?  The best reception is within 20 miles south of Boston.

The station makes it to the MA/NH border regularly, about 35 miles. It's also been DXed via tropo in Cape Cod and via e-skip in Georgia. Yep, it's just a little over the Part 15 limits.
There's a big hill south of Boston that blocks WPOT's signal.

acccoring to public FCC files, the antenna is mounted on a tree in Dorchester. Although the street adress is in those records, Im not going to restate it here.

Thats funny that someone logged then in Georgia via e-skip.

Yeah I remember seeing a post on http://dxworld.com/tvfmlog.html about someone in Georgia picking up hip hop on 87.7 during an e-skip opening. The same DXer was getting other Boston stations at the same time so it was most likely WPOT. It's amazing to think of how far a pirate station was DXed. Pirate stations and legal low power FM stations usually don't get out on e-skip because they're covered by stronger stations on the same frequency. But then again, WPOT claims to have 5000 watts, which would not be considered "low power".

"From the t-t-t-t-t-top of that big green tree in Dorchester, Hot 87"

I don't know how you all can pick up 87.7 that far. I never tried it driving in a car with a good antanna.
I do listen on a walkman. I get it excelent near Ashmont Train Station in Dorchester. I pick it up as far as JFK Train Station. But when leaving JFK TRain Station I start losing it (going towards Andrew Train Station)
I can not get it anywhere near Revere where my Uncle lives, as well as in Salem, Ma where I live. This is listenning on a walkman. I can't even get it in other parts of Boston (Kenmore Square, Downtown Boston, Park Street Area in Boston, Comm Ave area, Brighton, and Allston area. It does not come in around those parts of Boston. This is the same with Big City 101.3 (Although I pick it up on a walkman in Revere) and driving around I pick it up around as far as Beverly, Ma I also can't pick that station up on a walkman on those parts of Boston that I just mentioned

As I said, I never tried it while driving around with a good antanna

I guess that your walkman is overloading from the other strong signals. I remember hearing it last year when I went to Boston. It was static free in all of downtown Boston and came in as far west as 495. But they might have moved their transmitter since then.

A tree?!?! How the hell do they get power from a tree?

They don't, that's their tower! :D

Where did rapking go? I thought he would come here and show love for Hot 87 and pirates all across America?

I wish I was, if I was it would beheard (everywhere in Boston and this whole part of Massachusetts)

Ok, as I said last week, I'd tell you all how I get this station driving around with a good Car Antanna Radio. It comes in well in Revere. I got it good (but with static here and there) all the way going to Swampscott. In Swampscott it's more staticy, not really listenable. In this case, yes, I was listenning in the car through a Car Radio with a good antanna

But listenning with a walkman, I can only get this station only from Ashmont Train Station-JFK then I lose it after JFK Train Station. I can pick it up around North End area

Listenning to Big City 101.3 on a walkman, I can pick it up clear from Ashmont-JFK, then I lose it. I pick it up a tiny bit from East Boston (Orient Heights area)-Revere area. In those areas it is very staticky, not really listenable. I can't pick it up in Boston.
Driving, listenning with a Car Radio with a good antanna I pick it up from Revere/Saugus-as far as Peabody. It starts getting staticky after I get into Peabody (before Peabody Center)
