87.7 INDIANAPOLIS

What are the details on 87.7 FM in Indy?

It appears that it broadcasts 24/7 an audio feed of WRTV Channel 6. Interesting to hear ABC shows like Good Morning America and Grey's Anatomy on the radio. I looked on Radio-Locator and they show nothing for this frequency. Anybody know about the licensing, wattage and coverage area?

It's actually on 87.75 and it is the actual TV sound signal from WRTV 6. Same signal your analog TV picks up. Channel 6 occupies 82-88mhz. They used to heavily promote that fact on air. Be advised, that come February, 2009, it will disappear as part of the analog shut down...so enjoy it for just a few more months! Power? 10KW at somewhere between 850' & 1000'. They may have lowered their antenna a little as prep for DTV.

I used to love being able to "listen to TV" late at night on that station.

I'm a little nervous, almost trembling, about the rush to upgrade various non-coms in the Indy metro after RTV6 shuts off the analog. I expect a stampede.

No plans here. It's my understanding that even though 87.75 shuts off that the space will be reserved for something else.

The vacating of channel 6 WILL allow NCE FM stations to expand without protecting RTV6 ... however they will still have to protect each other. You may see some changes on stations that are currently vertical only or have a small horizontal pattern.

Channel 6 in Indy isn't reserved for anything after February 17th.

There has been some discussion about opening up channel 6's space for a new FM band ... that would require the channel 6s in other markets that are remaining in operation to move elsewhere. There is a desire for more FM radio bandwidth (perhaps for AM stations moving to FM?).

And all the existing noncomms will be glad to be able to even think about upgrading their signal without getting letters from WRTV's lawyers!

I worked for a noncomm in Terre Haute for several years and we had a special folder just for those letters!

I understand stations will have to protect each other. This also might result in some "horse trading" if stations want to upgrade near each other's contour(s).

Also, I highly support expansion of the FM band, and the first priority (besides daytime and/or graveyard AM stations that agree to shut off AM in exchange for FM) should be LPFMs and Class Ds and small Class As that want to move down into the new band. Also, translators and main studio waivers should be prohibited in the new band.
