87.7 Stunting?

I

Between 10:00 & 11:00 PM tonight I tuned in to 87.7 and after several days of dead air I was surprised to hear music. They were playing "snippets" of songs from the 80's and then the 90's. Around 10:30 they ID'd as "87.7 WLFM Cleveland" and then the music started back up with snippets of songs from the 60's until I got out of the car right before 11. Could this be 87.7 stunting meaning hopefully the new format will be here by labor day?

Surprisingly, the audio for WLFM between 8 and 9PM was horrible. You could not hear the music at all.

It was a big difference after 10PM. I guess they're working on the STL link from the Agora to its transmitter.

The sample was clips of number one songs between 1955 and 1992. Very creative and a break from the sports teams fight songs and Michael Stanley.

I heard this in the 8 PM hour, and the sound quality was AWFUL, even not accounting for the frequent dropouts that sound like they were caused by an Internet STL with a bad line. The audio was somewhat distorted.

I hope to hear it in the later cleared up state.

They took the signal completely off air a little after midnight. No dead air, no nothing. Just static. They brought it back around 2AM.

The audio sounds like it's from an old cassette tape, complete with warbling and speed variations (some of the latter were very noticeable). Even the transitions between songs sound like a tape being manually paused.

It is nice to hear something different on 87.7. I was sick of hearing Indian Fever and the other Cleveland fight songs. (I was also sick of hearing My Town by MSB, but to be fair, I got sick of hearing it decades before 87.7 existed)

Still stunting right now. Analog channel 6 just has a screensaver with a small blue square moving around the screen with the letters "WD" in white inside the square. BTW, the song snippets they are using, as someone else said, is a "Billboard Rock-era timesweep" with a snippet of every song that made #1 on their Hot 100 Singles Chart, in chronological order, from when Bill Haley's "Rock Around The Clock" charted in 1955 thru sometime in 1992. There may be warble and speed variations in it, prolly on an old cassette, but as far as the way the song snippets segue into one another, that it the way it was produced. I have this on cassette tape somewhere also, exact same snippets, but mine only goes to 1981 or so, was the final piece of one of those Rock'N'Roll history series that they used to air on the radio like on Sunday mornings, maybe they still do. BTW, Billboard had a different chart through sometime in 1958 when the implemented their Hot 100. So 1955 thru somewhere in 1958 are #1's from that pre-cursor chart.

If you want to play along at home, here is a list that goes along with the snippets, however the pre-1958 part will have some variations due to Billboard not having a single source:

That's the Western Digital logo. Must be using one of their consumer media players. Spare no expense for that FCC-mandated video. ;D

Now 87.7 is stuttering as well as stunting! Song clips all given the "Crimson and Clover" treatment, and sometimes audio carrier goes out completely for a half second. Audio extremely broken up, and the WD screensaver is kinda jumpy too. That was my hunch too that the WD may the be Western Digital logo, before Neil confirmed it.

Could 87.7 be testing just for the engineers to figure how to best broadcast from their studios? I'm interested to hear what else they'll play until the launch.

Seems like they boosted the volume to match other FM stations at 87.7. I just bought a radio that will tune to exactly 87.75 and much louder on the exact freq than on just 87.7, in fact louder than the other FM stations. Also analog channel 6 audio now seems to be way louder than say channel 35. But better than the low volume on FM they would normally have on just 87.7. The radio is a Kaito Voyager Pro that I got for $50 on Daily Steals a few days ago. Not the highest quality or sensitivity, but a nice emergency portable that solar charges with the battery pack or can use a crank, or regular AA batteries or USB or an optional power adapter. Has LW, MW, SW, FM with RDS (stereo with headphones), and WB with alert, as well as a flashlight, reading light, alarm clock with snooze, sleep shutoff, USB cell phone charging port, and also a digital readout for temperature and humidity! All digital with plenty of memories. No HD radio though.

87.7 Update

Here's what I just saw on 87.7's website. There is a picture involving a crane, two speakers with the frequency on each, the Terminal Tower and the term "Under Construction" plus an e-mail address below.

I also noticed a new website address - http://www.877cleveland.com/ - and that the "87.7 Clevelanders Rock" name is gone. The picture I just described replaced it for now, but the pictures of the casting call remains.

Well, the title of the page still says "Clevelanders Rock".

I noticed the title page too, but I don't see the logo. Such a horrible name for the station. I get it's supposed to reflect Cleveland, but it's just not clicking with me.

It's possible the name will stay in place, but then again, you never know. It could change. Plus, its never been used on air so far on 87.7. I just saw something different in place of the logo that caught my attention.
