87.9

Anyone near the Indiana/Illinois border hearing Family Radio WHCJ Joliet on 87.9? Only appears when Ground Wave is up and it appears to be in the direction of Terre Haute,IN from the DXer's location in Charleston,IL. Quite a mystery...

Could be some weird overload image, but these usually only happen on cheap radios when you are close to the transmitter. I believe FM is set up so all harmonics will fall well outside of the band. Is it happening on DX quality radios? Do they have a translator on or near 88.1 that may be broadcasting on the wrong frequency?

Is this another "Franken" FM where the TV aound on Channel 6 is used as a straight audio on FM. Frequency is right for that.

It's happening on a Heathkit AJ-15 which has been in use for over 40 years...the DXer is very familiar with how it acts and he is satisfied that it's a real signal. It's not there when band conditions are 'dead', but appears when groundwave is enhanced. He thinks it's a pretty potent pirate...but a Christian pirate? It is in stereo... We wondered if it was a channel 6 but he can pick up Chicago's channel 6 (87.75) and this clearly sits between 88.1 and 87.75.

WHCJ, according to everything that I can find, is licensed to Savannah, GA on 90.3

He means WJCH.
Thanks for correcting my keyboard dyslexia!

If people are devoted to Family radio to give them their life savings before "the world ends" someone could at least be devoted enough to start a pirate station to simulcast the stream if they have no local affiliate.

Those "white space" stations can go far with little power because the frequency is clear. A pirate station on 87.7 from Boston has been heard in NJ via tropo and GA via e-skip.

Sounds like a possibility. Offhand I'd say it's unlikely that there's some kind of harmonic, IF problem or inter-mod between WJCH and anything local to the DX-er. The Joliet station's tower is about 130 miles from Charleston IL.

They also run 3-4 translators but nothing on that frequency or nothing that would be a harmonic either as far as the translators go.
