870/1470 AM and WCSH

I saw a well-preserved looking Pat Callaghan this morning promote that News Center will now be heard on 870 and 1470 AM starting next week! With the signal going digital they will lose their position at the low end of the FM dial.

I thought the Nassau stations had a news relationship with the one-time co-owned perennial last-place finisher WMTW?

And didn't they try this before with the Channel 8 newscast on these stations?

Thoughts?

Cheers,

You may recall that Nassau dropped Air America in favor of ESPN, claiming at the time that Sports was the right format for the market, etc, etc. Wonder what changed? While neither 870 nor 1470 have great signals, is it possible that WEEI's network has already kicked Nassau's butt? Or does Nassau figure that Portland listeners have simply lost their appetites for Sports?

And what's the plan for after 7AM when 'CSH is just doing cutaways at the bottoms and tops of the hours....similcast the Today Show?

my guess is the cut ins won't be carried...simulcasting Today would probably require NBC's permission

Nothing changed. ESPN is and has always been nothing more than a cheap placekeeper for Nassau; it beats taking the stations dark. Same thing for 1220 in Sanford for the Phoenix Media/Communications Group. Neither group has any interest in putting a serious effort into programming these small-signal AM frequencies.

Looks like the format will be changing to oldies for the rest of the day on 870/1470.

The story mentions "The Oldies Channel" which probably means Scott Shannon's "True Oldies Channel" format. If they're expecting the music on that to be mostly 1956-1969, they're in for a rude surprise. The "True Oldies" music has evolved to mostly 60s/70s since it started to be carried on larger market stations.

Apparently it's not Shannon. They are doing everything in house. Interesting that is going to have a "full service" approach with NBC news at the top of every hour in addtion to the WCSH News in the morning and evenings. They are definitely getting significant exposure from WCSH on this. I've seen it a half dozen times in the past two days. Talk about a ton of free exposure for your format flip.

That's very interesting, almost hard to believe, what with today's economic climate. Then again, if they simply use their existing in-house staff to voice track everything they can probably do it on the cheap. "I'm the Bone Driver, here's Brenda Lee!" Ooh, its like waiting for Christmas!!

"Full Service" eh? Does this mean lost dog announcements, birthdays and the latest church potluck notices? Plus, school cancellations READ at least twice an hour and not banished to a website?

What's our Bud Mr. Sawyer up to these days... would be a perfect fit for him if the money were there...

This station does sound like it has some potential for the 55-plus crowd, but will advertisers want to go there?

Yes, bartender, guess I'll have a Manhattan!

If they had any real smarts (no comment) they'd bring Dean R back from his forced exile and have him do mornings. That would require some smarts, though. Dammit, I wasn't going to make a smart-assed comment!

Isn't Bud Sawyer doing mornings on WJZF-LPFM 97.1 from Standish these days??? Seems to me I read on here or another board that he was doing the show live from his house.
