88.1 KKWV Aransas Pass - On The Air

EMF has concluded construction on new Air1 Station KKWV 88.1 Aransas Pass serving Corpus Christi etc... Sounds good from most places in the city. Just what we need. Another "Remote Studio Waiver" EDUCATIONAL station.

Oh well. It sounds decent at least.

You're right, Fred. It doesn't happen that often. But I've been watching this one evolve and noted that there are three factors in play: the FM is using a directional antenna to reduce radiation toward KRIS-TV (and a number of other FM's as well); they're employing vertical polarization only and they've provided a showing that the population within the overlapping channel 6 contour is less than the standard requirement. This is definitely a case of a station being "shoe-horned" in, just as happened recently in Beaumont with another station being licensed on 88.1.

Indeed it is. In fact, they needed to get a slight downgrade of kklm 88.7 Corpus Christi to utilize their latest site. Of course that wasn't a real big negotiating problem since they own KKLM as well. ;D

This is a tight one. They also settled with Family Radio who got 88.3 KIFR in Alice. (Not yet built).

But it does matter now...

There have been FM applications denied for violating the NCE/TV-6 rules. Even though the applicants indicated that construction could not be completed before 2/17/09 and they'd accept a condition on their permit forbidding operation before that date. (I suppose the applicants' real point is that the windows were open NOW and if they don't file now, who knows how many years it'll be before another window opens...)

As jd and closeau say, this one was only granted because they're using a directional antenna and vertical polarization.
