88.5 LA Thoughts (KCSN/KSBR)

To my ear LA/OC's www.885fm.org has been rocking harder since Mark 'Mookie' Kaczor took over the PD reigns from the retiring Sky Daniels. I have enjoyed KCSN since Sky first created it in 2011. What does the AAA/Americana readership here on RD think of the music mix on the station today compared to the years Sky was programming it? Is it rocking harder; and if so, is that a good thing?

Mookie (and everyone else I've encountered from 88.5) are great people. Some of the nicest I've met in the business.

That personal disclaimer aside, and in reviewing the playlists, I think it was inevitable and necessary. The catch in Triple A is lowering the demos without being too "indie" for the room. I think there's a nice balance of the deeper "cool classics" while bringing in more of the classic modern rock and Triple A currents. With KROQ and ALT focused on younger demos and KCRW's more electronic and rhythmic angle, 88.5 has a nice niche here. I think overall it's a good balance and hopefully will help build audience and support for a very deserving station.
