88.5 WQOX AUDIO FEED

Someone who works at 88.5 needs to fix the audio balance problems and EQ problems on 88.5. Sound is panned far right, no hi-end EQ band, and is too muffled. Needs to be cleared up if you want people to actually consider listening to the station.

there is way too much "fake" expand it on.. or something like that.. maybe 3-d surround enabled on a consumer sound card... I like a wide field myslef but it is a bit over kill... otherwise 88.5 is one of the better sounding stations in town... hopefully someone will correct this.. its been the biggest annoyance so far

otherwise 88.5 has excellent processing

next thing you know people actually listen

Not for long if it continues to sound like that. It was still that way this afternoon. So...one or more of a few things is happening.

1. No one is listening except us - not even the staff.
2. No one cares.
3. No one has noticed or they don't think anything's wrong.
4. No one can fix it.

I know quite a few people who listen and even have 88.5 in a preset

but they don't notice anything is wrong...

the off balance/out of balance eq or whatever sound has been there for quite a long time....

at work i have a mono radio so it doesn't but me
in the car it is very anoying

All this talk made me listen to it in the house on the good tuner...

Balance is off, low end is weak, highs are clipping, way too much midrange.

Sounds like a misadjusted analog Optimud.

Hard to listen to.....

Yeah, other than that it's excellent

I think some of it is the material.. much of the older R & B just sounds like crap in the digital world.

On the other hand It sounds like they have absolutely some of the best digital copies of tracks they play of anyone in town.

They sound like a breath of fresh air compared to WRBO or KJMS.

Anyone else think RBO has pre-emphasis enabled somewhere they shouldn't maybe?
and KJMS just sounds lifeless and dull.

I have always though QOX could have been running an Omnia box.

Maybe Michelle could tell us or find out????

WQOX sounds a zillion times better than when they ran out of Craigmont.

I think they had an Optimod 8000 out of Craigmont. In any case, if they want to compete it might be a good starting point to sound good. Maybe I'm old school, but that's inexcusabe...and I'm not saying there aren't a few commercial stations around here that could use some TLC on the audio.

You're absolutely right... and it always drives me nuts, just because of my "slight" OCD that it is off balance. Anytime I hear live or broadcast audio that sounds horrible, it drives me up a wall and I can't listen to it.

I would think that 88.5 being a training station would actually keep an ear out for having the great audio quality since they are training people to do this stuff.

Remember who's paying for 88.5 and it's easy to understand! I've started reading the paper at WYPL again and was distressed to find they have 2 full time employees running the TV and Radio stations of the Memphis Public Library. Budgets have been cut to the bone in all of these worthwhile public endeavors. Thanks for looking out for us, Mr. Mayor and the City Council.

Volunteerism is worth your involvement. Consider.

...which goes back to a thought I've posted more than once here:

Why am I paying for two radio stations owned by Memphis / Shelby County? Volunteerism seems to work for WYPL and WEVL...and I can't believe I would ever actually say this, but it might be a good idea in this case to consolidate WYPL and WQOX (and the TV stations) into one operation.

and / or...move WQOX to 89.3, and use the HD channel for WYPL"s programming. With what they could get for 88.5, they could probably buy every visuallly impaired person in Shelby County an HD radio.

If MCS is going to run 'QOX like a commercial station, then make it efficient.

I used to read the paper and magazines for the Alabama Radio Reading Service and enjoyed it immensely, until a new job came along and ate up all my free time. ::)

If it weren't so far away, I'd jump at the chance to read again on WYPL. The online application makes it seem like they only want Scott Shannons, but hearing the station proves otherwise. ;)

Yes Chris and I have noticed the muffled sound. We are aware of the problem, but we aren't engineers. Getting things fixed there is like pulling teeth. We have great equipment just needs to be fine tuned. I want it fixed because I have to get my airchecks from there. Have been on vacation hope to be back on soon.

So, we've eliminated (1) and (3) then...and possibly (2).
