88.9 changes

So far they have only hired one professional DJ for morning drive, and as the parent of a student there who has worked many shifts at WERS, I hope that is the extent of the professional on-air staff. In my opinion, there are numerous students on the air at WERS who do an excellent job. In fact, I have yet to see what Knight brings to morning drive that is much better than what the students he replaced were delivering.

Replacing the two nighttime shows makes sense, although the station could have done a better job being proactive and letting listeners know, rather than having them be surprised when they tuned in Monday night at 7 or 10. I don't see why they can't air these shows once or twice a week rather than the previous five nights. They also have the HD2 channel that they could use for these shows. I believe the HD2 channel currently is 24/7 Broadway show music.

The website, wers.org, still needs to be updated. Rockers and their hip-hop show are still listed.

Regarding the "daytime" programming, it's seemingly become a bit more straight-forward alternative as of late. Sure, there's still enough folk, singer-songwriter, and soul thrown in, but the playlist is drifting more alternative.

As I type this, the ending of Kings of Leon's "Use Somebody" drops right out into a WERS bumper before he's even done singing. So apparently they need to tweak their automated "trigger points" as well.

That pisses me off! I enjoyed Rockers, 88.9 At Night and the world music program Gyroscope for years! It sucks to see a once respected college radio station go down the tubes! You won't find me listening to 88.9 anymore!

>> Boston's most popular college radio station is acting more and more like commercial stations up the dial, especially one in particular...You might say WERS is now in the same league as WXRV FM, 9.25, The River..WXRV is the only other Boston-area station with a AAA format, since WBOS switched over to alternative rock... WERS can't sell ads against its growing audience, but General Manager Jack Casey may believe the station can raise more money as a nonprofit.
