88.9 WDNA Audio Processing

I am doing some FM DXing with my RSPduo SDR radio and FM6 Yagi antenna. Stumbled upon WDNA and took a close listen with good signal. It really sounds good compared overcompressed sound of pretty much every station in the market. Not as loud but has dynamics, a rare sight indeed.

It's a great listen when I'm driving in Miami but I mostly have to catch them online because I live in west Broward. I can sometimes get a usable signal on my outdoor Super Radio, though.

17 year old me would be aghast for suggesting that a WDNA simulcast on 88.5 in Broward would be great.

I found out WDNA runs Orban 2200 and 128k Opus codec for STL. Its pretty amazing how clean it can sound with good audio material. Pretty sad state we have in commercial radio when an ancient 2200 can sound better than Omnia11.

Are there any interference complaints towards 88.5 from DNA listeners in Broward? I recall about 10 years ago when me and a friend of mine tried getting KPX to sound loud and good we got shot down by the schoolboard person responsible for the station. Their transmitter had one dead PA module so it ran at reduced power. I wonder if they ever fixed it. I took a listen last night and it sounds pretty bad. Do they have anyone there who takes care of it?

WDNA's light processing is typical of non-christian pop, noncom stations.
They are QRM'd in Broward County at night by WQCS, but rarely in the daytime.

I saw HD sidebands pop up from below the noisefloor around WDNA's signal. My antenna has 17 dB front to back ratio so it helps to keep WQCS signal out. I had 89.1 WSMR from Sarasota 148 mi away come in full quieting in mono few days ago. Cold fronts are going to be fun.

What, if anything, is on WDNA's HD subchannels?

I'm not far from Piper where KPX originates but I don't blame them for the spotty signal I get from WDNA. I was able to pick up 88.5 in Boca near the Turnpike just this week so they may be at full power. I rate the daytime audio as below average but at night it sounds like a RealAudio stream from 1996. That obviously has something to do with how Nova Southeastern is getting their audio to Piper and they used an ISDN initially but that must have changed sometime in the last ten years. If they're using a web stream would it kill them to up the bit rate? Going to 64k mono would be a start!

If WKPX's antenna were any lower,
It would be touching the ground.

I couldn't get them indoors when I lived in south Broward but it always did ok in my car. They had a CP to go to 25kw (same height) after NBC 6 went digital but they let it lapse for reasons I'm sure had to do with money.

Moving to the old WCKO stick at Rock Island Road & 44th street with the same 3KW would have accomplished the same thing for much less money.

But then they'd have to pay rent to the Beasleys unless they were feeling generous and donated the space to the school board. Since they own the tripod at Piper it would be a one-time expense to upgrade.

WCKO antenna is owned by SBA

The tower is owned by SBA out of Boca Raton, not the Beasleys. Maybe SBA would donate or let them have space at a greatly reduced rate since WDNA is not for profit. There is certainly space on the tower.
