89.1? Who's coming here and having to put up with WUFT Gainesville? ??? I hope they are a little further south.

In a nutshell, according to WUSF's website, the St. Petersburg Times, the Bradenton Herald, the switch over is still the same date discussed last month. (Wed 15 Sept 2010)............. Creative Loafing's blog indicated the switch over would be THURSDAY, 15 Sept (so according to that it would be 15 Sept 2011!)

To give anyone an idea as to how well they might receive 89.1 WSMR, check to see how well you receive Oldies 108; 107.9 WSRZ as WSMR's new tower site is at the same locationJust south of the Sorento East subdivision) although the power levels and antenna hight are close, but not the same.

WUSF-FM is running info that the switch between 89.7-1 and -2 will take place on schedule. They are delaying the return of 89.1 due to transmitter issues.

I guess to answer the original question on this thread................ when will 89.1 (WSMR) will be on....... is anyone's guess due to the technical problems.

Maybe Creative Loafing was correct in that WSMR will sign on Thursday 15 September

, which would be next year!! :)

In the meantime, Classical Music listeners within about 10 - 15 miles of Riverview can listen on WUSF 897.2 for those people with Hybrid Digital radios; otherwise, the options are listening online or your I-Pod/MP3 player, your stack of Classical music CD's or one of Sirius/XM's classical music channels.

From what I've read, the 103.9 translator in Brandon went with the deal.

Yes, Jeff is correct (once again :) ); the 103.9 translator was part of the package........ but the translator is being relocated to the USF Campus (at least the coverage map they show of the translator shows the center of the coverage as being the Tampa USF campus and it also shows (which I believe to be exagerated) the coverage covering the northern half of Hillsborough and Pinellas county, central Pasco up the I-75 corridor to the Hernando county line and even a sliver of Polk county. (Kathleen, Winston and the western edge of Lakeland itself.)

If that coverage map is accurate, that will be one powerful translator; also their website indicates the translator will be on the air by the end of September.

Now, we might want to take bets as to whether the 103.9 translator or the primary signal at 89.1 will be on the air first!!

We will have to wait to see.

If I actually liked Classical music, I'd be putting on my Birkenstocks, putting extra grease on my bicycle's chain, and stuffing my backpack with cheese, apples, and granola. Then I'd call for a meeting here tonight and hammer out a protest. After that I'd let my little light shine.
 
Will they be "The New WSMR with 89 minutes of PSA free classical music every morning at 9" ?
 
Never mind, "The Ledger" article says that 103.9 will stay with 89.1.

It has never been said, that I know of........ but according to the overlapping coverage maps on the WUSF site; it looks as though the 103.9 repeater is being moved to the main campus (north Tampa) of WUSF; which makes sense.......... now supposedly it will be on the air by the end of this month (September) and if it is on in 4 more days, it will be on the air sooner than the main signal, which was supposed to be on the air on the 15th of September. I don't know how up to date the FCC site is but the latest amended CP shows a date of 20 Sept, with a lower tower height (not good) and 55,000 watts instead of the 50,000 watts in the origianl CP (not to be confused with the temp authorization of 33,000 watts). I don't think the extra 5,000 watts will make up at all with the lower antenna height....... will have to wait and see.

The map on the WUSF website (the same map I mentioned in an earlier post) shows the center of coverage on 103.9 to be in the USF area; even though they don't actually say it, I would guess that the antenna would be on the USF Tampa campus).

I also have a feeling that the actual coverage area will be less than shown on the map; if they do an adequate job of covering all the area indicated on the map, that will be one heck of translator......... but I know from past experience that most stations commercial and non-commercial tend to exagerate their coverage area.

Today is the 26th of September and the website says that 103.9 will be on the air by the end of September.

At any rate, the website is very frugal with giving out much information and dates of when they think they will be on the air; I guess after the disaster of saying that 89.1 would be on the air 15 September and that has yet to happen.

I can understand their reluctance of giving out many details and dates.

If they weren't such NPR wussies, they'd go on the air now with 100,000 watts. Then they'd put up an electrified fence and crank out that " luvely, luvely Ludwig Van' to all the classical s**t kickers and brolly boys itching for action.
