89.3 WLYX @ Southwestern / Rhodes College

I believe Ron Olson was on WLYX at one time. And what about KLYX "Stereo Alley" downtown? I think it was the topic of a Vance Lauderdale article at one time.

OK Rob you got me googling and I found this:

Stereo Alley (between Court and Madison) is so named because KLYX radio station was in the Arcade building there and used to broadcast out into the alley. KLYX, which originally signed on in 1965 is now KJMS.

KLYX was the FM sister of KWAM, signing on in 1965 with a very easy listening/beautiful music format.

About 1969 or 1970, the AM went all gospel and KWAM's country programming moved over to the FM and the calls switched to KWAM-FM. Jerry Lawler was the evening dj on KWAM-FM for a short period.

Sometime in the mid 1970s, the format became more progressive country and then they started putting gospel on the FM part of the day eventually eliminating the country music. Never understood the programming strategies of Dee Rivers, the owner of KWAM back then.

Since early 1982, 101.1 has programmed some kind of urban format.

Do you travel with your notes?

"Do you travel with your notes?"

If I traveled with my notes, I would have given exact dates for the 101.1 format changes instead of saying "about 1969 or 1970" or "early 1982" ;D
