9/11 special on CBS

Did anyone watch it? Extremely sad and it brought back the anger as if it had just occurred yesterday. For someone in broadcasting, I was just curious though how the FCC would look at something broadcast on Network TV laced with profanities, when they've dropped the hammer on broadcasters for much less over the years.

I know this is going to fire up the "subjective" nature of the whole issue ... but many broadcasts have done this for years and not been in trouble. Key difference, I think, are the pre-and mid-show disclaimers about "don't let the wrong ears catch this". One example that come to mind is PBS airing Dick Van Dyke and MTMoore reunion in "the Gin Game" ... which even had an f-bomb or two in there. Not much controversy when it aired.

The show CBS had was a rebroadcast of one they did years ago ... and I think it was an excellent moment for broadcasters. Many specials have aired the past couple weeks on different cable channels and it's fascinating to see the detailed perspectives each one brings (from fire, air traffic controllers, elevator survivors, families coping, those who want memorials (and those who don't), and so forth.

I watched the CBS special when it first aired 4 years ago. I watched it again tonight. Both times it brought tears to my eyes throughout the program. It is an incredible piece of film making, and I personally applaud CBS for airing it again.

Not for nothin', but is there anything more profane than watching the towers hit and thousands die? Lil' ol me... I think an f-bomb is miniscule in comparison to what we watch happen in that video.
Helluva message we send while "protecting the children".

Isn't there a '9-11 Board' on the web for these kind of thread starters?

I can't watch or 're-live' that tragedy again folks....

..and I'm NOT looking forward to the NEXT one....

"Isn't there a '9-11 Board' on the web for these kind of thread starters?"

Yeah airwaver...I guess if it isn't Pat O'Day related it isn't worth posting on here huh? I mean post after post after post about some Pat O'Day video is much more important then remembering those that died five years ago.

Maybe in your eyes my friend....maybe in your eyes.

Yes Airwaver/Dialtwisty..Once again, don't feel the need to chime in with your opinions on every post. I know you feel like you own this board due to the amounts of useless crap you write here, but some of us want to hear views and topics other than what you think is relevant, (Pat O'Day and roll-o-banners for example).

No go back to the drive-through window and have a nice day ;)

I believe Sinclair decided to not show it, or to delay it until late Sunday night, for fear of somone complaining to the FCC. A couple of other stations did the same.

That documentary captured the personal horror of the day better than anything else I've seen. I saw it four years ago, as well -- just as I finished a 14-hour day at Ground Zero covering the first anniversary.

Given all I'd seen and heard that day, it was tough to watch, and impossible to stop watching.

Even with a 5am alarm looming and plenty of Tivo space, I had to stay up and watch again.

I had moved from NY to Portland three months before 9/11. Two very good friends had very close calls. Not exactly the best '9/11 cred,' but I still took it all very personally. I remember my last trip to the top during my last week in NY, and I've spent a lot more time in the past five years looking at a picture of my wife and myself on our first date -- taken at the top of WTC.

Awww, shucks...we didn't know ya cared - bluetooths...

Sorry to disappoint ya, but I won't dignify your cravings for computer hatred...

OH - Incidently, IF we all live to the year 2011 for the 10th anniversary,
will the future date that year of 11-11-11 be of any major significance??

:)

Rich,

Thanks for the personal story...I had a broadcast engineer friend who made a "narrow escape" that day. I can relate that even narrow misses make it all too personal.

My son and I spent an afternoon recently at the top of the Empire State Bldg. remembering "what the skyline used to look like." I hope that we never see another day like that again. I fear that we shall.

Here's to all the broadcast professionals that rose to the challenge that day...In, NYC or Seattle, radio was there.
