9 a.m. annoucement

You know the sad thing is there are many hard-working and deserving people out there, but
the market keeps recycling this bozo who hasn't mustered much of anything since his salad
days at KFMB. Remember when he went to KFMB it was already a dominant ratings and revenue
leader. I am just amazed by the back water radio mafia in San Diego.

"A funny thing happened to me on the way to Capitol Hill...I got an offer I couldn't refuse?"

Oh please. As if the voters were carrying him to a coronation before he'd even begun a candidacy. This guy is such a fraud. Give it a rest.

Actually with Duncan Hunter's son in the race there was no way Mark would - or could - run. However, there is an outside chance that young Hunter's military obligations (he got recalled to duty by the Marines) could kill his plans to run.

Now as to this AM 1700 radio station: isn't that one of those frequencies you tune to when you want airport parking information?

I don't know, but it sounds like this is still going to be a cheesy operation with a couple of non-financial talk shows thrown into the current CASH 1700 mix.

I'm sure the people who pay cash to have their financial programs run on CASH 1700 are hoping Mark will bring some new prospects - er, uh, listeners - to the station. I wonder if Mark will have to pay for his airtime?

Actually, Mark got the PD gig at KFMB after Scott Burton had it and had processed out a lot of the magic Jack Woods and and Bobby Rich had produced. Give Mark credit for getting KFMB back into a groove it had fallen out of (though it had probably not affected revenues at that point) and for handling the transition from A/C to Full Service to Talk with some style. And yes, that was more than 20 years ago.

And another thing about Mark, he sure can land a new job pretty instantly. I wonder if he
is working on these things in the background, or they just present themselves as soon as
he cuts ties to his current employer

Mark Larson's trifecta at KCBQ with LA's KRLA gets shutdown, so Laura Ingraham can be brought in.

Within weeks, he is put in the KOGO noon time slot.

The KOGO slot doesn't work out and in a couple of weeks he starts a new station format at 1700.

Amazing.............

Well, reading from the press release, it sounds like the Mark is trying to rebuild the chemistry from KFMB. But the problem as I see it is two fold. First, it is a very correct observation that 1700's frequency position is a minus. I believe that it is an expanded band station, and that just a few years ago, you would not necessarily be able pick up the station on the average store bought radio.

The other problem is the difference between KFMB and 1700. KFMB has a TV station and an FM station with lots of cross promotion, and while just about everybody knows about KFMB, you can't say that about 1700, and just as I said about FREE FM, 1700 is going to be an also ran, unless BCA can muster up enough coin to buy a TV station, and don't hold your breath!

Expanded band from 1610 to 1700 AM has been a requirement on radios sold since the last century. It was mid-1990s when the FCC mandated the change. Likewise, new television sets MUST have HDTV receivers built in. Back to AM: Expanded band stations are 10,000 watts omni-directional (for the most part) day -- and have a requirement for AM stereo. They are 1,000 watts at night. Mexico may have similar requirements. Good luck on finding that AM stereo radio in analog.

I have a Philco radio from 1945 that has the area above 1600 AM as a "Police Band". Interesting.

Side note: I was listening to KNX 1070 from la LA: the music sounders for traffic in HDRadio are in stereo. Attention grabbing!

CBS uses stereo sounders for its traffic on many of it's News Radio format AMs. KFWB, WBZ, and WINS, all of which have used the same traffic sounder, have used it in stereo. A while back there was a actually a thread about this, and somebody even posted the audio... and indeed, it was in Stereo!

Now, if all AM radios sold were in HD, then we could get music back on AM, hm?
Yeah, I'm holding my breath too...
