9 KHz audio and HD Radio?

Let's start fresh. Is 9 KHz analog audio on AM compatible with HD radio? Or is the current 5-6 KHz bandwidth many stations are using as good as it gets?
 
To the best of my knowledge this is as good as it gets. The days of analog 10 Khz bandwidth are done. I hope that answers your question.
 
Correction RF: The days of 10khz bandwidth for AM are done for stations that go HD. AM music stations are still common where I live, and I don't see any of the local (and locally owned) stations around here who are serving their communities WITH MUSIC, reducing bandwidth to 5-6khz anytime soon.

Many Clear Channel stations dropped to 5 kHz long before HD Radio was on any of them. I'm sure if you checked, you'd find any non-IBOC Clear Channel AMs that actually matter (making money in a market of some size) are also broadcasting 5 kHz audio.

Why?

Corporate directive - and it has nothing to do with HD Radio. It has everything to do with being able to modulate the signals as hot as possible to effectively extend coverage.

5 kHz audio and 140% or higher modulation if your transmitter is capable was the corporate mandate a few years back. As Randy Michaels said on an engineering conference call "I'll gladly take a modulation ticket."

If you toss out the audio nobody can hear on a modern receiver (anything above 5 kHz) you can modulate the remaining frequencies that much hotter.
