90.1 WCCE Buies Creek -- Going Dark

It would be a pretty good bet that a religious broadcaster will get this frequency. 3kW in the NCE band around Raleigh/Fayetteville area will fetch a pretty penny with those guys. Wouldn't surprise me if some religious broadcaster hasn't already approached Campbell with a big check and that is what set this off.

My guess would be that EMF - the K-Love people, will LMA the channel and keep it afloat while the transfer paperwork goes through. They want the Triangle Christian audience, but coverage is somewhat weak on the station they have now, which is halfway between Durham and Danville, VA.

3000 watts might not get them where they want to be in that market, but if they're the ones behind this they've already done the preliminary work toward a power increase. Decent power from Buies Creek could add Fayetteville to their coverage area, plus give listeners a solid K-Love signal the length of I-40 from Greensboro to Wilmington and on to Myrtle Beach.

Nonetheless, it is sad to lose a local Christian broadcaster. I was exposed to some people of remarkable faith working...and building...the local presence of the body with the Christian stations I have worked for in the past. It's a shame that others will not share that experience and build upon it.

Later...

You can be sure 90.1 will continue to broadcast. In fact, I'm certain Campbell has already made a deal with someone, very possibly with EMF (who seems to have unlimited funds to purchase stations throughout the country) as Matt suggested. The school will make a boatload of money off this deal.

Sad, isn't it. The fact that a non-commercial college station like WCCE will soon go away proves that times have changed. Unfortunately, there aren't as many young people that are interested in terrestrial radio these days.

There is one other christian radio outlet in the triangle that may have approached
Campbell University with acquiring the frequency, "His Radio, WRTP".
They currently have a number of low-powered translators around Raleigh, Durham,
Cary, Chapel Hill and other smaller communities, and even though they are
broadcasting at 88.5 with a good signal, a second one at 90.1 would give them
great coverage, especially if they can get a power increase and move the tower
closer, but i would not be surprised if EMF Media is looking to get it, they are
also in the process of putting on a station at 104.1 in Swansboro later this
year, and they just signed on a low-power station at 100.5 in Wilmington,
even though 88.9 comes in strong out of North Myrtle Beach.

Just a comment--I can't even pick up K-Love in my motel room in Myrtle Beach, near the old air force base. Not that I would want to.

I am a WCCE alum, and this news came as quite a shock. As I remember, the university "missed out" on some open windows that would have allowed them to expand the station's reach, leaving it basically landlocked with 3,000 watts at 105 ft. Any expansion of the signal would need to be done via translators.

As a matter of fact, according to recNET, WCCE applied for a upgrade of their signal on Feb 2. Its not a huge improvement, but I still find it unsettling that an institution that preaches truthfulness has no problem lying to their listeners and others.
