On 6/27/77, WUSB 90.1 FM signed on for the first time as an FM station at 5:30 pm, broadcasting from the top of the Graduate Chemistry Building on the campus of Stony Brook University, with an eclectic mix of free-form programming. Prior to that, it had been a carrier-current AM station receivable (sometimes) only on the campus of Stony Brook for a number of years.
Today, WUSB celebrates 30 years with a live interview and chat with the original (and longtime) General Manager of the station, Norman Prusslin, who only recently retired after 28+ years of service to the station, and at 5:30, the original broadcast will be re-aired. 30 years later, WUSB is still one of few non-commercial stations that have stuck with free-form programming, open to students and the community at large.
