Comparing WZBC's airstaff with WRKO's airstaff...or most any commercial station's airstaff....is completely apples and oranges these days.
I'm sure I'm preaching to the choir here, but the college radio scene is characterized primarily by the ability for the DJ to select his or her own music, and have pretty much free reign on what they play/say during the shift. There's usually not much oversight at all. Commercial radio, by contrast, is where the airstaff has near-zero freedom in what they play or say (except for popular talk show hosts, a subset that has its own weird set of written and unwritten rules).
If a WZBC DJ tries to apply their same methods for WZBC on a commercial radio station, it's just not going to work. Same thing in reverse...can you imagine the hate mail WZBC would get if they put "Artie the One Man Party" show (with the same music he played on Kiss108) on every night instead of NCP? Concordantly, imagine the hate mail if WBUR started airing NCP instead of All Things Considered? I cringe just thinking about it!
That's not to say that a WZBC DJ couldn't work in commercial radio and do well at it, and vice versa. I know there are at least a few ZBC DJ's who do exactly that. It's just that they have their WZBC style in place at WZBC, and their commercial radio style in place when at commercial radio. Again, it's apples and oranges. For that matter, it's why we have WRKO on one frequency and WZBC on another. Certainly one can discuss the relative merits of why one station should have/not have a bigger/better signal or whatnot...but ultimately, it does the Boston market no good to have WRKO's style on both 680AM and 90.3FM any more than it does to have WZBC's style on both frequencies, too. Each has their listenership and that's why they're different stations.
That said, I think about 90% of what WRKO programs is utter crap...but that's merely my personal opinion. ;D I actually don't like what WZBC programs, either. But I'm sure glad that both stations exist...otherwise their respective audiences might be more inclined to try and change the stations I *do* listen to, and I'd rather those stations stay about as they are.
