Awesome! I see this station's nickname is "The Goldmine". That's great and all, but don't we already have a station with that moniker? I think our friend's over at the Lumberyard need to send the East Valley Institute of Technology a memo telling them to change their name to something more akin to hit music. Maybe, "Fresh", "KHITS", "Z90" or the recently vacated "Movin'" moniker. Sorry KVIT, "Goldmine" is taken! ;D
Could be some argument there...From what I understand, the transmitter is located in the vicinity of Goldfield, not far from an old goldmine! ;D

In-between (near 7th Street and Camelback), the two stations alternate (at least on a car radio). KLTW seems to become stronger as you head further north on 7th.

We will add local artists once per hour in March, and a 3 hour local music show on weekends.
Saturday and Sunday Mornings will be a Show called "Grosz's Greats" which I have 250 shows recorded over the past 12 years teaching at this school.
We will broadcast live on Friday Nights from around the south east valley, sometimes High School games, some play by play, but not entire games, sometimes from malls, theatres, etc...
Friday Nights and Saturday Nights will feature a mix from DJ Perry (a former student from the early 90's-Friday 10pm-Midnight, followed by a house mix show from Mid-1am from another former student from 1998. Then from 1-4 am saturday morning and Mid-5am, expect to hear "takeover Shows" featuring hour long "specialty shows"-Death Metal, Ska, Punk, Deep Hip Hop and More, all created by current students.
Our signal is Great in AJ, East Mesa South of Mcdowell, and east of Gilbert Road, and very strong south into Gilbert, South Chandler, Queen Creek, San Tan, and down to Maricopa and the Gila River Indian Res. We get some spots in Scottsdale, and Fountain Hills.
Our "60 DBU" area, whatever the hell that means has about 300,000 residents, and our good area has about 700,000 residents, so we are a top 50 market LOL.
Funny thing is we struggle to hear it at the school. We have already inquired about future
transmitter sites to move to in AJ, and possible translators.
You can expect to hear us non stop starting about 2:30pm on Saturday the 29th, with just music and sweepers/promos all weekend long. Live student DJ's start Monday the 31st at 8am following my 6 to 8am show.
We don't want to sound like an over produced, consulted radio station. We want to poke fun at our signal fuzz, and give away antennas. We will concentrate on listeners 12-21 because they can go to school at EVIT, where we offer 30 plus programs and are nationally respected, you will hear promos and spots that promote those classes once an hour.
You will hear liners that promote the classes as well.
You will hear sponsor and underwriters following non commercial guidelines, but we will take in money and trade that we will give away and sell.
We want to be at car washes for people, and fundraisers, we want people to call up and say happy birthday to their friend. We don't have a voice guy, we just don't care.
I tend to believe that if a person doesn't like what they hear on any station they'll pop out then, and pop back later, and since I don't need ratings, or TSL, my variety will be a strength not a weakness. I feel it will be programmed well, and people will like it.
We will market hard with social networking and a high school tour to build that young audience, we will play local artists and they will get people to listen for their songs.
We have 3000 teens at EVIT, who all have hundreds of facebook friends.
Some of the things will take some time, unfortunately a good website may be one. We are a school, and not run like a radio station, I only hope to have the website ready for launch.
If not...oh well.
It will be fun to listen to, and it's my dream come true. How many people can say they have a radio station to do what they want with. (as long as i don't tick off the Super and Governing board)

Listening this weekend, I have to say that this station has a pretty good mix of music. In fact, I would say that it is better than most of the high-profile stations in the valley, which surely says something about the state of FM radio in Phoenix. :'(
Unfortunately, this station suffers from the KWSS problem, but to a smaller extent since at least KVIT has a 2000 watt signal (KWSS has a mere 13 watts). Comparisons between KWSS and KVIT: Great programming, great local, independent influence, but a crummy signal. As sgrosz said in his post, the station comes in great around the trailer parks in Apache Junction (much like the Nifty 1260), but has major issues west of downtown Mesa.
Driving around town this weekend, I decided to test the strength of KVIT's signal. The signal comes in great around my home in Gilbert, but, heading west on the U.S. 60, starts to fade west of Alma School. The station is still decent around west Mesa, but, once I made the transition from the 101 northbound to the 202 westbound, it gets a lot of static interference. Around ASU in Tempe, the signal has a really tough time coming in and you can begin to hear K214DN-FM (KTLW) breaking through. The funniest thing is that the station has a tough time coming in at the East Valley Institute of Technology campus over in west Mesa, the school the station serves!
In all honesty, I wish you guys over at KVIT the best of luck. Overall it seems to be a good station and I look forward to hearing more from KVIT. It would just be nice if KVIT had a better signal or a stick closer to where the people are. At least Joe Sixpack in Apache Junction will be happy! ;D

This is truly a labor of radio love combined with determination, passion and a no compromising attitude. Obviously something rubbed off in our years together.
Past and present students are referring to this amazing feat as "Mr. Grosz's Opus".
The perfect analogy.
I'll be flying into The Valley for some much needed sunshine (-35 WC in F/M area), a Jerry Del Colliano seminar at the Phoenician and then KVIT's launch party on Saturday.
I wouldn't miss this for the world - and if you love radio - you won't either.

Good grief - How much better can the Valley get when it comes to this wide variety of great sounding stations - WITH good variety that we have right now? Now we have a new school station that sounds exceptionally well on top of that? Then, there are some places with MULTIPLE college / school stations and a lack of many format styles, yet they don't want to change or do anything.
I swear, the day I have to move will be the day I wish the most that I wasn't into radio, because if I wasn't in to or fascinated with radio or music, then I wouldn't know enough to care or miss it. I'm thankful for now, but... once I leave, the fact that Phoenix is this hot right now will not benefit me in any way.
Anyway, let me stop worrying about the (unknown) future and thankfully enjoy the present.
In addition to talking about what certain places with college/school stations could be doing, I also recall talking about 'having a passion for the business and/or your station' quite a bit in certain places throughout these boards in the past. Not sure how most people felt about it, but now that's pretty much irrelevant because now, here's a perfect & specific, live example, of what having a passion and not just trying to be basic & cookie cutter just to get by, can produce.
Anyway, this is great, so thumbs up, and kudos for being able to recognize and give some attention to dance, especially now that it's a very sensible time to be doing so.
Those are my complete thoughts regarding the entire situation here. Enjoy your week folks.
